Recently, I've been welding exhaust tube (stainless steel, 16 gauge) for car projects and I've found the biggest time consumer for me (besides prep work) is clamping tubing with odd angles/curves that has been tacked together.  I can't just simply turn the pipe over to continue a Tig weld bead because it won't rest flat on the table even with magnets and my strong hand tool clamp collection (due to irregular curves / angles...think headers, etc).  For me to get a good bead, I find resting my hand on the tube as I weld gives the best result, so that got me thinking...Are there any flexible "snake" arm clamps for this exhaust tubing that is strong enough to keep pipe suspended in position with my hand resting on it (I was thinking 2 flexible arms like those flexible stainless steel microphone holders), but not so strong that I cannot move the flexible arm as I turn the tubing configuration?  If any of you welding web'ers have made your own tube holding solutions, I'd love to see your creations.oh, Merry Christmas and happy holidays to everyone here too!
Reply:Not sure you are going to find anything commercially made that will do what you want.  Used to build headers and custom exhausts and just welded them on a steel welding table.  Kept various size items around as spacers to put under the tubes and get them in the position I needed to weld.  Anything laying around the shop worked, wood blocks, vice grip clamps, scrap tubing, etc etc.
Reply:Here are some clamps I made up you could adapt to your needs bu changing the top ends to fit tubing.http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=48154
Reply:I had the same problem and I built something to hold it and allow me to re position it and also to purge it, I have a thread here:  http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=61590might at least give you some ideas...maybe overkill but it did the job for me and helped me a lot miller 330a bp TIGmiller dynasty 200DX TIGmillermatic 185 MIGthermal dynamics cutmaster 101 plasma cuttersnap-on YA5550 plasma cutterhypertherm powermax 30 plasma cutterbaileigh CS225 cold sawetc....
Reply:Look on ebay for Bogen magic arms and super clamps. They are photo grade  strong multi position clamps and arms  that can hold a lot of weight and move it any way you want it. I have a set and never thought of using them for welding but they would work good for that.  They will hold camera's flashes etc without any problem and so they should hold exhaust components. They only open to about 2" so you might have to clamp at the ends and position it from there.
