My friend wants to buy this stick welder used for $300.00, I don't know much about these welders. If it was a miller/Lincoln I would say it's a good buy, I don't want to give him bad advice. Is it worth the $300.00? Are they good welders?
Reply:I don't know what machine it actually is, so it's hard to say. Century made most of the older store brand stick machines like Craftsmans and Montgomery Wards units. Those machines were decent quality. A few had issues with the sliding shunts getting stuck if they sat for years and weren't moved, or if they were always left in the same position and never moved. Usually though if you don't force them and break them, you can open the cover and free the shunts with minimal effort. If it's the style with the handle you squeeze and then slide to move the shunt, I'd check and see if it moves freely. If not, I'd bargain the price down. Most of the other units I've used I'd have no problems buying almost sight unseen.Century itself is now owned by Lincoln, so I wouldn't be too concerned with their newer products either.Price is on the higher side of what I usually see AC/DC tranny machines going for, but the 250 amps DC is higher than most machines, so that's a plus. Most top out at 150-180 amps DC for the most part. I'd try and bargain him down some if possible. Can you test? How clean is it? Etc..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Don't know your area and the welder prices there.  In my neck of the woods, I can get a Miller Dialarc 250 or Lincoln Idealarc 250 for $300-400. However, even a Lincoln AC/DC 225/125 goes for $150 - $250 (or more)."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:From the pictures my friend sent me it looks very clean, almost like new. Several years back I was driving down the road and there was a wards AC 295 amp welder sitting on the side of the road with a free sign on it. I had to stop, my wife had a melt down, she thinks I have to many welders. Lol. After five hours cleaning the dirt and grime inside it worked perfectly. I was pretty sure Century made welders for wards and sears. This one has the shunt adjustment on the top with a cover, the work and stinger cables have some dry rot so he will have to replace them. In my area miller dialarcs and rond top idealarcs are going for $500.00 and up, most are starting at $600.00 or more. I'm thinking $200.00 as it's been for sale for two months and it needs new cables. Does that sound like a good offer?
Reply:Seems reasonable to me. Chances are high if he ever wants to sell it he'd get almost every penny back, depending on how much he spends on new leads..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:$200. sounds reasonable considering the condition of the leads.  My $350. Idealarc came with about $300. worth of 1/0 leads in great shape.Century made welders for everyone, it seems.  Marquette, AIRCO, Linde, Dayton, Hobart and ESAB all rebadged them."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:$300 sounds WAY high to me, especially for an old Sears.  I wouldn't pay over $100, oh maybe $130 for a super-clean one.  I just sold an old Lincoln 180A no-fan tombstone for $80 that I had bought for $50 and got a lot of use from but no longer need.  $250-300 would be okay for a big old Lincoln or Miller industrial-duty AC welder in good shape, or for a Lincoln tombstone AC/DC, a really nice one. These Craigslist guys think they are selling gold nuggets!! They have a handful of old rod with powdery, flaky coating and light rust, and a dull, rusty slag-hammer and a new pair of $6 Harbor Freight gloves, and think these "extras" should add value!! There are lots of old buzz-boxes around, and unless you're in a hurry, I'd say keep some cash ready in your wallet and keep looking. If you ask around and keep your eyes open in the course of your local travels, you could easily run into old welders gathering dust in the corner of a machine shop, autobody shop, etc., that haven't been put up on Craigslist, but which the owner will get rid of cheap just to make a little space in his shop.Last edited by old jupiter; 04-20-2016 at 11:26 AM.
Reply:Depends on the conditions in your area, and how long you are willing to wait for a deal. I sold a Century 250A AC/DC welder for $350, bought another one a couple of years later for $90 (no leads and bad AC plug).A few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:I agree with what others have stated. Look for a Miller Dialarc 250 or a Lincoln Idealarc 250.
