I have built myself a squat rack, and toying with the idea of clear coating it to keep the raw steel look. The racks I have built in the past I have always spray painted (some powder coated). The question I have, is there some sort of clear coat you recommend? and do I just spray it or roll it like paint?   or does this even exist?thanksDerekDerekMiller 211
Reply:I've had good luck using oil base Flood Penetrol as a primer on bare metal, even rusty metal that's been cleaned up w/ a cup brush. It dries clear and seems to bond well.                                                  MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:I used the Rustolium clear on some outside recycled horseshoe plant holders. They have been outside for a year and still look the same as when I sprayed them. I did wire wheel and buff them for a clean look and still look good
Reply:DerekWhether you Spray or Power Coat - go with a flat/matte finish.Nothing ruins good metal work faster than a Gloss Clear Coat.Opus
Reply:clear powder coat
Reply:Hello Derek, if you have a reputable paint supply dealer near you: take a trip there, explain what you are trying to accomplish, and see what their recommendations are. You will often find that many of these folks have been at it for a long time and can certainly help you with some of the do's and don't's associated with your proposed project. Good luck and best regards, Allanaevald
Reply:I've used the clear Rustoleum on aluminum on parts that go on boat trailers in the past. Years down the road and still haven't had any issues what so ever with them. The aluminum is still just as shinny as the day I sprayed it.-DoogieMiller 350PMiller Trailblazer 325 EFI w/ Excel PowerLincoln LN25 suitcase welderXMT 304/22a feederMiller Syncrowave 350LXMiller EconotigHobart Handler 140(2) Uni-Hydro 42-14Hypertherm 65 plasmaWEBB Gap bed lathe
Reply:I've used rustoleum clear aswell. Works good.
Reply:x142 on the Rustoleum Clear. Clean it up really good first and wipe down with acetone before you spray, cause if you leave it ugly it's going to stay ugly. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger
Reply:Rustoleum clear here too. Built this "tree" last yr for the wife, debated on regular paint but gave this a try. Wire brushed these horeshoes, wiped down with grease and wax remover, and rattle can cleared. With the shoes it kind of gave it a "smokey" color which really looks nice.

Reply:I have used many different clears. For what you are wanting, i would use a clear satin polyurethane. Wipe it on with a rag, buy the quick dry solvent based stuff. Two coats and you are good to go. It chips a lot less that a lacquer, or acrylic enamel, and is much cheaper.
