i recently acquired a ranger 8, it has been sitting for over 5 years. it is a late 90's model. i got the onan 16 running like a champ. the outlets on the front provide power, and the auto setting idles the engine up and down as it should, but it is not full power by any means, a grinder is down to about 200 rpm, recip saw very slow as well. i havent tried the welder yet but i am sure its not even going to be hot enough to spark. any ideas?
Reply:Did you check the output voltage of the outlets? If they are right I would put a Hz meter on it and check the frequency. Dont know much about these but do they have seperate generators for welding output and AC output?
Reply:Sounds like it is close to operating. I will second the HZ and volts check. If the engine speed is a little slow. Your out put will be low and motors will run slow.Find a way to measure them. The HZ should read 61 to 62 Hz with no loads on the welder. If you don't have a volt meter that can measure HZ. I have heard of a device that measures HZs and watts and you can buy it at some home centers. It's for checking appliances and just plugs into the 115 volt out let.The ranger 8 is a single generator system and the welder out put knob will control the aux power voltage. The manual says to turn output control to max for aux power operation. All you may need to do is turn up the output.
Reply:The device is called Kill-a-Watt ccawgc and can be found at Home Depot.  Handy little bugger.http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/...atalogId=10053Machine has to be up and running before plugging it in to operate.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:thank you for the tips, i will try turning up the output all the way, i didnt even think of that. will also get the device to measure the output accuratly. had a nasty cold and fever and havent been feeling like going out and messin with it for a few days.
Reply:Thanks Duane. I have a fluke 87 and a clamp meter. Haven't needed a kill-o-watt
Reply:Could this machine need flashed?
Reply:bumping
Reply:put a volt meter on the brush wires and see if there is 12 volts dc during cranking. The pcb should have a built in flashing circuit. If you are getting any output at all you don't need to flash it.  Low output is a control and engine speed problem. If the rotor is ok, stator not shorted, weld diodes not shorted. We have to look at the exciton circuit and the pcb.
Reply:Have you measure the plug voltage and HZ and the voltage at the weld terminals.Get those numbers and we can help you.
Reply:I have had the same exact problem with mine in the past,i have a late 90's Ranger 8 Also,my problem ended up bein the battery was weak and sucking all the charge to keep it running,i put a new battery in it and it worked perfect again.I can't explain why it worked that way,but thats what solved my problem.
