I have wanted to build a plate (well technically 1/8" sheet) bumper for a while.. So I pulled my old bumper off and started on some mounts. I got the top piece cut out and welded on and then.... well then life happened. It stayed like it was for a couple months. I finally got it mostly finished yesterday, I just need to finish welding it out and grind all welds smooth. Then some D rings will be welded on as well. Here are some pics-Mounts are 3/16, everything else is 1/8.Man I wish I had a plasma.....Sorry for the not so great quality pics. Most work was done at night and didnt have very good lighting. I need to get a big boy camera and not just my iphone. Didnt get the best progress pics, you know how you just get in a groove and then think I should have taken more pics, well I will try to get some better ones from now on until its finished
Reply:Looks great I think. What did you use for cutting anyhow? The cuts look great to me and nice job on the mounts. Pidge.

Reply:"Death wheel" hahaha. I wanna get on one of these myself, but throw a tire carrier on it as well. Great job I'd say, please put up some painted completed pics for us. Pidge
Reply:Man, I really like this bumper. Making a bumper is the main reason I just bought my plasma, since the rusted out crap that's on my truck needs to go. I wouldn't be surprised if mine ends up looking a whole lot like this. Though I'm still undecided on diamond plate or flat...Are there any additional supports welded in behind the plate? Or is it basically just you see plus the two mounts on the ends?I've seen that a lot of guys tend to use 1/4" for mounts and 3/16" for the plate. To you think the 1/8" will hold up?Again, good work. Psyched to see updates.

Reply:I'm another fan of the beveled edge. It's well worth the extra effort.IW Local 580 NY, NY

Some cuts were made on my portable bandsaw that I converted into a vertical bandsaw with a table. Eats through anything you throw at it. Plasma is definitely next on the list though. I bet I could have built this bumper in 1/2 the time if I had a plasma for the cuts. Definitely am not going to start on the front bumper until I get a plasma. There will be way too many complicated cuts for that one.

For cutting straight lines in sheet up to about 3/8", I swear by my worm drive Skil saw and a Metal Devil metal cutting blade. Just clamp a straight edge down and go for it.
Reply:Nice bumper build. My 97 Ford bumper has 200000 miles in road salt, still looks new.GM truck bumpers are crap. The Ford bumper could be installed on GM trucks with some brackets. I as behind a late model Ford F150 and saw that that bumper was moving around.Bubba made 2 holes in the tail gate and ran ropes out to the bumper.I backed off as I didnt want to run over a bumper.Fellow passed me and tailgated the rope bumper, he backed off when he saw the bumper sway.
