I got the layout part down to make custom kitchen hoods with arced seams now i need some advice how to bump form the pieces. My shop has a 10 ft accupress but only 4ft punch and die with a radius on them. I will take pictures of everything tomorrow. Any advice would be greatly appreciatedI live, like every real man, in my work.

Reply:If you are doing stainless you should put something on the upper and lower die to reduce contamination of carbon steel on the stainless. Duct tape is one choice. If you have not bumped a curve you should try some scrap strips. If you start your curve are one end of the curve you will get a ridge. Generally you should start five or ten hits in from one end at a less than required setting. Move your hits toward the nearest end and that will prevent a major crease at the beginning of the arc. If your setting is good and you are getting the required radius then you can start feeding the piece through hitting on your layout marks. Generally is is not possible to form an arc without having at least some marks. If you are just forming to the bottom die radius then things are different. I have bumped with a three inch piece of pipe on the upper and a very wide bottom die.... about three inches. It was a very gentle curve. The crease marks still showed for each hit. I notice on your die rack you have a big four way. I would consider using that as your bottom die and just air bending with as wide a nose as possible on your upper die. |
