Hey guys im trying to outfit my toy trailer with a inverter based welder Tig/combo, im looking at 200amp range welders 110/220volt.bouncing between a few offereing between TA,miller, Lincoln, and looking at what i can power it with, ive been looking at honda and yamaha generators trying to figure out what i need to run one of these welders.im going to be mounting the generator on the tounge of a 20ft enclosed trailer, or possibly inside where its pretty cramped dune buggy and 2 atv's 2 full size bottom boxes across the front of trailer.is two of the suitcase honda generators hooked parallel going to be enough oris a 3000-4000 inverter based generator going to supply enough?im trying to not go buy a giant 10,000 watt noisey generator as i dont have the room.
Reply:Why not just buy a Thermal Arc Scout generator/welder? The Thermal Arc Scout comes with a Honda motor. It is an excellent stick and scratch start dc tig welder. Runs 6010 real well also.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:Just for kicks one time we experimented with running small migs off normal generators (not high end like the Honda). We used a generator rated at 5500 watts to run migs that run on 20 amps. It did not go well. 5500 watts is approx 46 amps at 120 volts. But that's only 23 amps on each 120volt bank in the generator since it's a 120/240 generator (I looked up generator theory because of this experiment). The extra 3 amps was not enough. The settings that worked on shop current did not work when running off the generator. Everything was colder and the wire speed had to be turned down.Additionally, the generator could not react fast enough to start welding instantly like when on the shop outlet.Having said all that, this was a regular generator and standard welder. I have not tried it with inverter based systems on Honda generators. I will be interested in hearing how it works out for you.My bottom line for my equipment - just enough is not enough. Good thing I can use a gas engine welderDave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:thanks for the help, ive been looking into 8000-8500 watt machines aren't much bigger then the 3-4000 watters.generators that supply both 110/220volt.
Reply:I run my TA181 off of a cheap chinese 8k-10k surge generator. It works, but 145 amps killed the generator after 5 seconds. I don't think I can mig over 22.5-23 volts either. Under that it runs great.

Reply:anyone else have any experiences?
Reply:found me a 7500watt diesel generator that im headed to go check out tonight. this should power me a decent 200amp weldersad seems these titan generators aren't very good, and it has a 50amp plug not 50 amp service.Last edited by OffshoreNDT; 01-19-2013 at 02:54 PM. |
