What are some tricks to getting good tie ins on inside corners with 7018s. I am a very proficient MIG and TIG because I do it all day long at work but I don't work with stick much and I'm trying to improve some at home on my own time.Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
Reply:Strike an arc about 1/2" ahead of the intended restart. As soon as the arc strikes, quickly bring the rod to the crater of the previous run. Once the crater is filled, continue dragging forward with the new stretch of bead.So.....strike an arc, back to the crater (quickly), then proceed forward. This has to happen quickly. If, after striking an arc, you take your time going back to the previous crater, you'll actually run a bead going back. Then, you'll end up welding over that bead once you progress forward. This will result in a higher bead in that area. Not pretty....After practicing this, you can get the restarts to blend right in.Just exactly do you mean when you say " inside corner "?  The opposite side of an outside corner weld, or just a typical fillet weld? You can begin by practicing restarts on just flat plate, then progress on to the inside corner welds.RichLast edited by steelsurgeon; 05-03-2016 at 08:48 PM.
Reply:Like the inside corner of a box so to say, I'll make something up to demonstrate.Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
Reply:Like down in that inside corner of this fitment for example where the three plates come together.Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
Reply:IMHO,  I find it best, "not always possible" to plan your tie ins when stick welding , start shy of the corner , run into it and up, and have your tie in somewhere else.  but on the other hand its good to be able to do it wherever necessary.trailblazer 325 efi excelSlugger sawMiller 12vs Miller 135hypertherm45xpLincoln Sp 200 Lincoln Idealarc 250  Ac/ Dchougen and Milwaukee magstrailblazer 250g "1987"HTP aluminum feeder ahp alpha 200dangerous amount of tools
Reply:aarolar,Well,,,,, how about just learning to turn the corner while your welding and keep on going?   I was taught that you do everything you can to avoid stopping and starting in inside corners.   If for some reason you do get forced into stopping in an inside corner don't try to restart there.  Start some else and weld back into the corner from the other direction so that you put the stop from that weld on top the stop from the first one.

Reply:Weld towards the corner from each side.  When you get to the corner it will be so hot that it will blend right together.AWS certified welding inspectorAWS certified welder
