I'm in the process of layin out a simple plan for a small utility trailer for personal use. Wanting to do a 4x8 using 2" angle iron. Is 1/8" over kill for the frame or is 3/16 gonna be ok to use all around?  Mainly using to haul light watercraft around.. Don't want anything flimsy.. Any constructive replies appreciated! Thanks for helpin this virgin out,-Froggy

Reply:3/16 is thicker than 1/8.  Your question does not make sense...   typo??Tiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:I would use 2"x1/4" for both the frame and the rails. Make it a little bigger than 4'x8', that way you can haul sheets of plywood or metal sheets on it. I would go a little bigger on the tongue, maybe 2 1/2" angle. A trailer built like this could be used for you small boats but could also be used for so much more, and it will, they always are.

Reply:Bob's advice is spot on. They always find side jobs ... trailers that is.City of L.A. Structural; Manual & Semi-Automatic;"Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place where gold is refined. Reply:Yeah I should've typed 1/4Just using it to haul some yaks around. I have done some mods to an existing trailer. Just not one from scratch..
Reply:I would go a larger size in 3/16 before I went to 1/4" thick. That's just my preference tho. And going over size an inch each way was going to be my advice too, especially with the 4x8 size. Nothing worse than getting a sheet of plywood stuck in your trailer.Yeah, I know, but it'll be ok!Lincoln Square wave 255Miller Vintage mig30a spoolgunThermal Dynamics Pacmaster 100xl plasmaSmith mc torchEllis 1600 band saw
Reply:Thanks for the hints. Planning on picking up material next week. Will post some picks of progress along the way
Reply:If you search for trailer plans, there are companies selling good engineered plans for many many trailer styles.

Reply:Yikes on those kinda yaks!! Don't load those from the rear!!!  220v welder some experience never built a trailer though. I like the idea of bolting down the racks. This is a previous mod to an existing trailer. Just worried with the bolt on stuff is easier to get ripped off.I was lucky getting the photos on here. Now getting to come out facing the right direction. Well thats another animal

Reply:I have built a few specialized trailers in the past, but found that it is almost not worth the labor by the time you price the materials, vs buying one from a BBS. Have you priced all the stuff beside from the steel yet? Axle, tires/wheels, coupler, wiring, lights? If your looking to specifically build a kayak trailer with a tiered rack system, I totally understand.I pulled the trigger on a 6x10 w/3500lb axle this weekend. I can do a lot in regard to building specialized attachments on that platform, hell even enclose it in the future; wouldn't be the first time! Either way, for what "I" need, it was cheaper for me to buy the platform and add the desired accessories later.-Niche
