Forgive me if this one has been beat to death. I did search and did some reading but I am still confused.I currently own a trailblazer 302 which has the 14 pin connector.I was thinking about buying an XMT 304 or 350 and getting a suitcase to go along with it for mig welding.I want the 12 so that I can have larger spools but I am not sure if I want the VS or the RC. From what I read the VS can be run from virtually any welder but the RC requires a 14 pin and enables you to adjust at the suitcase. I also see the RC has limitation of about 75 feet that you can go from the main welder due to the control cable. This length limitation is not an issue for me. Some threads mention problems with welding with small wire on the VS? I plan to mainly use .030 to 0.45.They cost virtually the same. It seems the RC would be best for me due to the controls but it seems that the VS is a lot more popular. One more wrench to throw in to the mix is I currently own a power arc 300 inverter stick welder. I love the way it welds I find it to have as good of an arc as any machine I have used including a SA-200. My plan was to get the XMT for both the stick and mig needs and sell the power arc but if I am understanding it correctly I might be able to get the 12VS suitcase and run it off my power arc?Whatever I do I want a top notch mig machine as my top prioirity. I was going to buy a 252 before I started thinking of going this direction.
Reply:The problems with a voltage sense feeder with small wire are when being used with a CC power source such as a SA -200 or a miller big 40 or a legend. With a CV power source you will get consistent feed like a RC feeder.
Reply:Miller claims the arc is the same between VS and RC. Do your other machines have 14 pin connections? I woul go with VS if you expect to be any distance from the welder.
Reply:To run wire you really need constant voltage. A VS feeder will allow you to run off both CV or CC. The way it runs off CC is that the feeder constantly changes the wire speed to try and maintain a constant voltage. With small solid wire in short arc ( what most people think of when they think of "mig") the feeder simply can not adjust the wire fast enough for good results. If you push the amps up so you go into spray arc, typically with FC wires that require lower volts to go into spray for a given wire size, a VS feeder off a CC power source isn't all that bad. However spray is a hot process, poorly suited for thin sheet or out of position welding. The question is if your power arc 300 inverter stick welder has the amps and duty cycle to work well in spray, and if you have a need to weld heavy steel in the flat, horizontal positions. Welding vertical and overhead in spray can be possible, but a real PITA and takes a lot of skill because of how fluid the puddle is.Understand the limitations above  only apply to running off a CC power supply using a VS type feeder. If you have a CV capable machine, like your Trailblazer, the feeder will run just like the RC type feeders will. Note there are some older CC only versions of the XMT 304 out there. I think Miller stopped making the CC only versions and all the newer ones are CC/CV. If you buy used, just be aware of this fact, and make sure the machine is a CV capable model if you want to run wire. Also avoid the older XMT 300's. They had some issues and aren't wort repairing if they fail. Miller fixed those problems when they went to the XMT 304's or XMT 350's, so they are quite rugged..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:I would get the RC. My VS just does not like wire smaller than .045 which makes welding on the thinner stuff much harder.
