The driveway gate I installed a couple of years ago has some water in one of the horizontal tubes, it probably seeped in around a bolt hole.  There is enough so I can hear it slosh around when swinging the gate.  The tubing is 14 ga 2" galvanized with a sort of thick paint on the inside.   There has been a bunch of welding on the tube, so I think the interior of the tubing near the weld areas has probably had the protective coating burned off the inside.  how can I stop the internal rust?   So far, I have come up with filling the tube with some sort of coating, then letting it drain out and plugging the holes.  That would take three gallons, and I am concerned with the coating causing problems (like blowing up) if I ever try to weld on it again.  Or, drilling a few small holes and using a sprayer to shoot some sort of rust converter in there- the actual welded areas where the metal is bare are only a foot or so long.  got thoughts?
Reply:Is it possible to drill drain holes in the bottom of the tube intermittently along the span without them being noticed?-Chris
Reply:normally on gates I drill drain holes as eventually water finds a way into sealed tunes.
Reply:Water has its own way of going where it shouldn't. I use dog kennel panels for my chicken coop enclosure .  I noticed yesterday when I relocated them one had water in it and split over the winter. It must have been from melting snow. As for your gate build one in stainless.
Reply:Put in a hole near the welded joints for a drain and the get a can of fluid film and spray in with a straw through drain hole? May be able to take nozzle off brake clean can and do the same with spray paint if it can take the brake clean nozzle. If you didn't know that trick you can lay down spray paint real quick!
Reply:Try anodes
Reply:Yeah, I would go with drilling it, firstly to let the water out and so it can drain freely in the future, then secondly to give a good squirt in to the holes with some sort of oil based spray after it has had a few days to dry out from the water that was in there.
Reply:next time you change the oil in your pickup, dump it in the gate
Reply:Ospho poured in it and drained out. Shouldn't rust any more.
Reply:Just put in seep holes at the lowest point and be done with it. Or build them with solid round bar. then there is no worries about water inside.LOLKlutch 220si mig , stick, and dc tigHobart 140 AHP ALPHA 200X 2016Lotos LTP5000DSmith O/P
Reply:There are auto body anti corrosion treatments you can buy that come in a spray can with long hose and 360° spray nozzle. Made for exactly the situation you're dealing with here
Reply:I was told water will happen, in cold and hot weather the inside of the pipe will breath as the air heats and cools, expands and contracts, bringing moisture with it. Any pin hole allows this. drain holes are a must. I have seen square pipes freeze and become round and split.
Reply:ATF is pretty good for rust.  I put it in my truck's box frame.  Linseed oil is ok.  Fluid film is good too.  One of the best anti rust solutions I've found is a home made concoction of 1 qt 30w non detergent oil, 1 gallon mineral spirits, and a couple wax toilet rings.  Blend it all and let it sit until the wax breaks down.  I spray that in the frame and underside of truck with a cheap pump sprayer.  Mineral spirits evaporate leaving a wax/oil coating.  But.... if your concerned about flammability, it could be risky.
