Since David's thread covered fillet welds, i thought I might as well do a groove weld on 3/8 with my lincoln 135. For prep, i beveled two 3/8 plates and tacked them together with a 1/8 open root. No preheat. settings on the machine were tap D and 5.5+ on wire speed. (0.023 wire) Also on 30amp circut. This is the thrid pass out of fourHeres the back side of the weldCap it off, note that the dime gets very hot even after a shot timeThen I cut it into stripsAnd bend them, the one on the left broke, but that was the start of the weld so it was cold to start, lack of fusioncontinue on next post...CharlesThunderbolt AC/DCRed Flames BWELincoln sp-135t
Reply:Just a close up of the broken piece. thats where I tacked the plates together and didn't get enough penetration, you can clearly see this mistake on the pic of the backside of the weld, 2nd one down.CharlesThunderbolt AC/DCRed Flames BWELincoln sp-135t

Reply:Very nice Rich! I do a double bevel and I can root and final pass the material and it holds nicely. Thanks for going through the test.John - fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!- bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com

Reply:Nice job rich, Sorry I didn't get back to the chat room before you left, busy night at work. I thought those welds looked great and you showed a good example of welding 3/8 with a 110 welder.Miller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed.

Reply:Geesh, now I will need to try this myself. My 110 miller mig welder is an old one like daves, so I think I will go and do some 3/8 plate to see how my welder compares. Again, awsome looking work Rich. For only being 17, I think you are going to excel in the welding field.Miller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed.

Reply:the root didn't come out as well as i hoped. the machine took a little dialing in before it went in good. take notice that the starts are very cold and theres a nice little gap. feathering the stops and tacks would have been beneficialcut in half...this is as far as I could bend it with a vice and wrenchdoes it pass the visual inspection??? Reply:Great Job!I´m wondering... how much time did you waited for doing so many passes with the duty cycle of your machine? My Babies: HF Drill pressHF Pipe Bender3 4.5" Black and Decker angle grindersLincoln Electric PROMIG 175that´s it!
Reply:NICE! So you can weld 3/8 With the prep you did, lots of surface area for the weld to hold on to. I still prefer to burn that far in with .045 wire and a couple hundred amps. Thanks for taking the time.DavidReal world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:David - the entire point of these posts was to show the readers of this forum that these small machines are capable of doing a little thicker material. Those people who said or didn't recommend doing thicker material with the small machines have the luxury and money of a larger machine. For those that DON'T have bigger AMP machines, the option is there to do these thicker material projects at home...with proper prep and beveling.John - fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!- bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com

Reply:This so true it hurts, I have done it, they will do a good job, it takes time, the down time between passes is what makes it so long to do, these machines require a break as do most, a lot of people don't realize this, but the machine never forgets to cut off or shut down due to overheating
