Had a guy contact me needing a gate built for his trailer, He owns a company that rents bounce houses and this is his smallest and first trailer. The "gate" that was previously on it was just a piece of angle attached to some 2x6 wood ramps and hinges at the bottom. not the best trailer, it had been welded on previously by some people who obviously didnt know what they were doing or just didnt care. He needed a gate for it. The heaviest bounce he has is 300lbs so this gate is way overbuilt, however with the way I built the gate he can always slide the gate off and use it on another 4 foot wide trailer, all that would need to be done is have some 3/4 pipe welded on the trailer for the hinges to slide into. Simple build-2" x 1/8" angle3/4 #9 raised expanded metal3/4 sch 40 pipe3/4 round stock2 7/16" x 1 5/8" linch pinsDidnt spend a whole lot of time cleaning the millscale off the material, but It was welding just fine with no porosity issues. Didnt take a whole lot of pics as I was just wanting to crank it out for him, but heres what I got-He was very happy with it and has already lined up a couple more jobs for me to do for his business. One job is adding sides to a 5.5' x 12' trailer and also building a dunk tank for him as well. Hope y'all enjoyed! I am always open to suggestions or advice or criticism of things to improve on the next go round.

Reply:Nice heavy duty gate/ramp. What does it weigh?GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:Nice job!Just a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. Trump/Carson 2016-2024

Reply:vettelvr75Congratulations on expanding your client base - I hope they have been doing their push-ups.Too many 'curbs/bumps' - the top deck of a 'tail-gate'should be 'one plane'. Too much structure: x 2.Too much unsupported air: x 4.The expanded-metal's gauge, size of the openings, and service direction; make it oriented in the wrong axis.'This is irrelevant': because the structural underpinnings are too heavy, and mis-distrubitued in regard to the EM.Lite expanded-metal requires support 'cross-axis' to it openings.Your expanded-metal should be one piece on top [of a supporting structure] , and not four 'unsupported' pieces underneath.Repairing this repair - maybe in your future.Opusps - turn up the heat - and don't 'jog-the-bead'. - ditto: the top deck of a 'tail-gate' should be one-plane.
Reply:looks nice! i have to make one for my trailer as well! he should get many years of service from it!

Reply:The frame looks to be plenty stout enough, but I think it would be better with the expanded metal on top of it. That would provide traction over 100% of the gate and not have a possible slick spot where the angle is. Next one, put the expanded on top of the frame in one piece so it is supported from underneath and the welds just hold it in place.Whats with all the holes in the angle iron at the end of the gate? Will something be screwed on there?

Reply:I do have to agree with everyone that it is a little overbuilt, I originally had a simpler design in mind but this was the only way that I could think of to attach the expanded metal. Thanks for the other ideas guys! I also wanted to ensure that it would impress the guy I was doing it for, since he is a business owner and has a lot of welding work done, I didnt want him to go back to the welding shop that he came to me from after they put him on the backburner. |
