This, I'm hoping, to get some on the job input from our Forum? Looking to purchase a 110v DC output home shop welder that is capable of handling fluxcore wire welding for sheet metal. I realize that mig welding with solid wire will do sheet metal. In essence most of the mig/fluxcore welders will be satisfactory. HOWEVER prefer to use FlUXCORE wire only at this time. There are a number of them I've come across - such as Hobart, Everlast, Longivity, Lincoln, Eastwood, Miller, Campbell Hausfield and Yes - Harbor Freight.Would like to hear our Forum Family input on what experiences you have had fluxcore welding thin sheet steel. Say in the approx 18 - 20- 22 - 24 gauge thickness area? Using any of the above mig/fluxcore wire welders. That is with using fluxcore wire only. I'm having one of those senior moment ideas and would like to hand this Idea over to our Forum for their experiences. IF you will dealing with the smaller DC units. Please don't take this the wrong way - not trying to promote any conflict but I can only purchase one more unit and would like to hear from you all. If I'm out of line just let me know and feel free to tell me where I can go. Thank you very much!  KWBTW It seems that AC output Fluxcore welders does not do sheet very well!

Reply:I've done flux core welding on sheet metal before so it can be done but it required some heavy duty swearing. If at all possible get some shielding gas and some 0.023 diameter er70s6. As for a small mig welder I have an Everlast power imig 140e and I love it. It runs both flux core and solid wire beautifully. I really like its infinitely adjustable voltage knob over the tapped voltage knobs of most small mig welders.Whatever welder you get I suggest getting one that is capable of mig welding and not just flux core so that if you ever want to do mig welding you can.My "collection":Homemade Stick WelderVictor O/A TorchAC 225Ideal Arc 250HF 90 Amp Flux CoreHF Mig 170Solar 2020 Plasma CutterPower i-Mig 140EHarris O/A torchHF Dual Mig 131140STAlpha Tig 200x
Reply:Ironman or 210MVP ! You won't regret it.
Reply:I can get you a nice razor weld mig.Go gas. Flux is too hot for that thin of material. Remember flux is a "hot" process and made for thicker stuff.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer

Reply:I would need to actually measure the material 15-16 gauge is the thinnest I ever went with flux core.  I have only done it on accident but I wonder if flux core can be used to generate acceptable welds on thinner material electrode positive.Lincoln says 20 gauge is quite doable with flux core.Last edited by mikecwik; 05-11-2016 at 10:44 PM.

Reply:I have a forney 299 FLUX-CORED MIG . I ABSOLUTELY love it! !!I can weld up to 1/2" iron! Amazon.com Sent from my SPH-L520 using Tapatalk
Reply:for years before i got the maxstar i used a 110v L-tec 130 with innershield to weld sheet metal around 16 ga. i use nr211 in .035 dia. the lincoln sp125 works good also.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:I've been doing body work on rust outs since 1969. If distortion weren't such a problem, it's all I'd use. I've tried flux core a number of times. I believe it is a process best suited to thicker steel, and bigger welders. Plenty of heavy equipment is welded with flux core. For me it does NOT work on 20 gauge. Shielded MIG is ok if you are patient. TIG is best, sometimes bronze. TIG leaves the weld soft enough to hammer.WillieAn optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared. A pessimist is usually right, when wrong, is delighted, and well prepared.
