Barn Find gas welder

I picked this up off craigs list yesterday for $500,(no leads)it doesn't have a meter on it but appears to have very low hours.The sheet metal and face is in near perfect condition,from the serial# it dates back to 1987. Whats the history on these? were they reliable units? It seems to weld real nice. Reply:This was a good find. I have welded with these, never owned one. They're good, dependable machines, if taken proper care of. There have been several rebuilds of similar machines on this forum and if you can keep this thread out front where it'll be seen, some one with more experience with them will weigh in. Reply:That has a 2 cyl Onan engine, if it is running well , take care of it and it will continue for a long time. Let that motor over rev or run out of oil and you are looking at $1600 to rebuild it, Onans have become very expensive for parts. Great machine, Wire feeders will run from it but wire type and size are limited. Good stick welder for 7018  1/8 . I have had several. Keep that fuel tank clean, there getting hard to find, I found 1 used at a weder repair facility but he wanted $300 for it. Reply:Yeah thats my B7800, the loader has  no problem lifting it,but my front tires looked pretty squished and I could really feel my power steering working hard,that tractor is hands down the best tool Iv ever bought. Reply:That is not an Onan engine. It is a Kohler Magnum 18-20 hp engine. You can still easily get parts for this one. The Onans are a bit more difficult to find parts for. I own two of these Kohler engines. One is on a commercial lawn mower and the other one I picked up last year to use as a spare for the mower.  The only significant problem that I've ever had with the one on the mower was the internal governor, which broke at about 3200 hours and required a complete engine tear down to fix. Nothing in the motor appeared to have any significant wear, so a new design governor, gasket set, and about 15 hours labor fixed it (Kohler must have realized the old governor design was inferior). The mower engine now has over 4500 hours on it. In your welder this engine should last you a very long time.
