I part a lot of 316 stainless. I've never been real pleased with the insert life. It's not terrible but less than ideal. To give you an idea... I run this operation with the parting tool reversed because it's easier to check and change the insert. I've been using a small coolant line to blow coolant into the part but invariably chips move it from time to time no matter how tight I make it. One time I lost the coolant entirely and ate the entire insert and blade which is never good. So I dreamed up a solution that really lays down the flood and is chip proof. It has a LOT more flow. Made from a scrap of 1/2" aluminum and a short piece of stainless tubing. I started by drilling all the holes and cross drilling the part. I then drilled a 40 degree for the tube hole with a center cutting end mill. I didn't originally plan for a tube but after testing with just the hole it was obvious something was needed to smooth the flow. I didn't get a photo of the tube but it was notched to allow full flow from one side. The short tube was pressed in and retained by the set screw/plug. Didn't take long to make but what a difference. I only have a few parts on it so I don't know how it will help the numbers but I'm hoping to an improvement. Attached ImagesLast edited by forhire; 03-07-2013 at 12:19 AM.
