Do any of you fellas know who makes a good wiring harness for the glow plugs in case i need to get one, or maybe does International Harvester still make em. 1990 FSuper duty with a 7.3 IDI Diesel, no turbo, a strictly stock motor if that makes any difference.Thank youPopeye

Reply:Interesting. Where does an indirect squirt it's fuel? A manifold? I've had a VW diesel, a Ford Lehman, a couple of diesel gensets and now this Cummins. I'm poised to change the injectors in the Cummins as soon as my hand finishes its regrowth.Do not believe everything that you think.

Reply:22:1 will produce plenty of heat for ignition. Presumably the glow plugs are an attempt to mitigate smoke and soot on startup. Yes, all the engines I have owned were direct injection. The Lehman and the Cummins both smoke at startup and until they are warm. The Cummins had a heating device to preheat the air intake but I pulled the plug on that very early because of the load on the alternator. Still starts with about one rotation when stone cold.Do not believe everything that you think.
Reply:22:1 will produce plenty of heat for ignition.     this is correct but the glow plugs are mainly for cold starts.  just like starting ether.  i have an old allis chalmers backhoe with perkins diesel that only cold starts with ether.  one of its options was an ether container in cab that was routed in the air intake just to get it started when cold. that way you could start cold from inside the cab!my 01 duramax will start down to -20 without glow plugs I've heard.  but I've only tried starting w/o glow plugs at 0 degrees.  does smoke some but not a lot.  doesn't smoke at all at 0 degees if i let the glow plugs cycle.lincoln 125spmonkey wards 250 ac/dcmiller 211 w/spool gunahp  200 sx tiglotos ltp5000dof course duramax diesel
Reply:Most of my experience is with the larger diesels like the big Caterpillar stuff, some of those were built both as PC (prechamber) or DI (Direct injection). The PC engines in the old D9s needed either a gas starting engine to spin them fast enough to build cylinder heat before you opened the throttle or glow plugs to ignite the fuel mist with an electric starter. Problem with prechambers is that they are surrounded by coolant and pick up heat slowly. But that same D353 engine with direct injection would usually fire within 5 turns. And that brings up another difference, the DI Cats had the injection timing advanced more than the PC engines with a reverse advance unit that would set the timing back as the speed increased to prevent burning holes in pistons. The old PC engines would actually "flood" with fuel collecting on the pistons if the glow plugs weren't working or if you cracked the throttle too soon with the starting engine running. That reminds me, the PC engines with a starting engine ran a tube through the diesel intake manifold using the starting engine exhaust to preheat the air for the diesel.
Reply:Originally Posted by duramax-robthe idi (pre turbo) injects the diesel fuel into a small chamber built in to the head.  i think the glow plug is located here.  the head looks like a regular head but with an offset chamber to one side.  as the fuel is injected the glow plug starts the burn of this chamber which in turn burns the main combustion (burn) chamber (over the piston).  the glow plug stays glowing from the burn to do the next compression cycle.these idi engines have about 22:1 compression where as direct injection turbo have about 16:1 compression.i know im not exact but anyone one here is fine with tweaking my answer!
Reply:Originally Posted by Popeye an old minerWell that answers that question, I always wondered what they meant by indirect injection, now I know. Learn somethin new evryday. I orderd a new controller and new plugs today, I will see if that corrects it,I hope so. I f not I will see what I can find, the girlfriend lit right up at 10 degrees this morning I had her plugged in all night so I should be good like this for awhile
Reply:Originally Posted by duramax-robi also found out that the glow plugs are there for normal operation.  if bad, they can cause slow acceleration and poor fuel economy besides hard cold starting.  the glow plugs act like a spark plug in a gas engine.  i didn't know that.  glad your getting going.
Reply:Originally Posted by 12V71I've never heard of glow plugs continuing to glow after the power was shut off by the timer or the coolant temp sensor. My old 6.5 GM had 5 dead plugs and ran no differently after it started and warmed up. Starting it was a challenge if the block heater wasn't plugged in. New plugs were like having a new truck as far as cold starting.
Reply:Just look at the volt gauge. I installed a toggle switch on my 7.3I got tired of watching my voltage drop down to about 10 V or less for probably a minute after the truck started. After the truck starts, I have the choice to flip the switch And cut the power through the solenoid....Or just leave it until the glow plugs shut off on their own.Miller 211Hypertherm PM 451961 Lincoln Idealarc 250HTP 221  True Wisdom only comes from Pain.

Reply:Originally Posted by 12V71One of the quick checks on the big Cat engines was to watch the ammeter when you turned the start/heat switch to "heat", the draw usually told you how many good plugs you had. The D348 V12's would draw 60 amps. If they didn't you were pulling valve covers and checking individual plugs with the VOM.
Reply:i put the new controller on the other day and the new glow plugs in, it still dont work, so I got to figure out what is wrong there. But that is kinda sorta on the back burner for now since she lights up as long as she is plugged in, the reason its on the back burner is my alternator on the welder took a crap, and its up in Frackville gettin rebuilt right now, couldnt find one Deutz parts are hard to find and very expensive, so Im playing with my grandaughter today.
Reply:Originally Posted by ronsiiYep, it's kinda similar on my cat D4... just watch how far down the amp gauge goes and you know if they're glowing or not
Reply:probably gonna take 2 people and a 12 volt test light to test the wiring to make sure you get the power to the relay.  I do believe that the relay is much like a starter wiring...one wire is hot all the time and has a signal wire.  You could "jump" around the relay with a push button on the dash and direct to the glow plug wires.  IF necessary I could get a phone contact for deutz parts.
Reply:Originally Posted by bigbOn a Ford all you need to do is leave the door open and you will notice the dome light get brighter. Course you could also put a LED in the A pillar and wire it to the GPR like I did.

Reply:Now I’m thinking about itMaybe the reason why these glow plug relays go bad so often it’s because they stay on so damn long. This last generic relay that I put in at the same time I put in the power off toggle switchCoincidence?I don’t know but those relays get hotPut your hand on it after it’s been activated for a minute or 3Miller 211Hypertherm PM 451961 Lincoln Idealarc 250HTP 221  True Wisdom only comes from Pain.
Reply:The OEM relay is weak, there's a White/Rogers (Stancor) relay that fits in there, it's nearly twice the size of the OEM and a tight fit. I put one in in 2009 and it's still working, in fact I have never heard of the Stancor failing.Miller Challenger 172Miller Thunderbolt AC/DC 225/150Miller Maxstar 150 STLVictor 100CVictor JourneymanOxweld OAHarris O/ASmith O/A little torchNo, that's not my car.

Reply:Thats what Im thinkin about doin...bypassing the controller altogether for the truck. The electrical stuff for the welder motor and most any other automotive or industrial motor I go through these guys In Frackville about 20 minutes from the house and local to most of the places I work. They rebuilt the alternator I dropped off yesterday and I put it in this afternoon, the starter was burned up as well and I ran up after talkin to the man he said he would wait for me, I went up and he had a starter for me all ready to go. I been dealin with these guys for years, I used to take stuff up to them when I worked in the strippins pullin wrenches and weldin before i built my first rig, and got stuff for that rig from them, they are very good people. So tomorow morning I will put the starter on and with Gods grace I should be lightin up my life again. This is an expensive week.Next project on the welder is to replace the front seal and the gaskets up front, has a bit of a leak that may have caused some of the trouble with the alternator, only have to add maybe a quart evry 3 or 4 weeks but that little bit of oil that leaks sure does make a helluva mess. So if you could get me that phone number for the gasket and seal kit it would be appreciated....Thank youJust don't get rammy and long term hold on the jumper for the glow plugs...YOU ... become the relay/timer.  Too long of a hold WILL cook the plugs.  Give me a couple days and I'll get that number, hopefully they still exist after all this horse hockey happening.

Reply:Roger on the stauffers.  I thought there was another company down that way somewhere that used to use deutz for tractor pulling competition.  I was spelling it wrong and couldn't come up with them.  Sorry, but now you got 2 places to order parts.  I'll get the dubosky name to my brother who uses deutz tractors on the farm.  Not sure he knows of them.  wehn ya did the pump, did you take it all out looking like a giant butterfly?  or did disassemble everything and pull the pump and the drive train cover off in another piece??

Reply:About 15 years ago I had to drive across Northern Wisconsin to a mine in Northern Minnesota for a job.  It was a 4 hr drive and it was -25 degrees.  My old 97 Cummins never got above 120 degrees and the grid heaters kicked in about every 2-3 minutes all the way there for 4 hrs.  That is the only time I ever remember them kicking on after the engine was started and I have owned that truck for 21 years.  The 5.9 Cummins has grid heaters instead of glow plugs.
Reply:a piece of cardboard or a cool looking weather front will help the engine operate efficently.  You have to keep a little hole in the center open...about 1/3 to 1/4 the total grille opening. Take a look at the road tractors in the winter time, they got weather fronts on them for a reason.
Reply:For relays there are continuous rated and intermediate rated ones. Most glow plugs are single wire where you run a hot wire to them and they ground through the case. A continuous duty relay a push button switch and some 10-12 gauge wire and you’re good to goMillermatic 252millermatic 175miller 300 Thunderboltlincoln ranger 250smith torcheslots of bfh'sIf it dont fit get a bigger hammer
