Hi all,I've got a 90 accord lx with a cracked transmission case (aluminum). The crack is right in the middle on the bottom. I'm going to try to weld a patch or something over it, but was wondering if anyone has any experience or advice with this. Worried about frying something on the inside, probably going to use MIG from a home shop. Not a pro welder at all. Transmission is still in the car.
Reply:First, disassembly is REQUIRED! You can't clean anything up well enough to weld while it is still in the car. Especially aluminum. It'll be easier and cheaper to contact a junkyard (ahem, automotive recycler) and get a used, same type transmission. Lots of them cars was produced and they didn't change much year-to-year.Worst case, move the innards from your transmission to the 'new' case. The amount of time spent trying to get the oil out of the aluminum....Be wary of The Numbers: Figures don't lie,. but liars can figure.Welders:2008 Lincoln 140 GMAW&FCAW2012 HF 165 'toy' GTAW&SMAW1970's Cobbled together O/A
Reply:like mentioned above...cleanliness is importantI broke a gm 4l60 a couple months back and did a down and dirty repair on the case while it was in the truck.I cleaned the best I could without removing it again....went to ace hardware and picked up some aluminum stick rods. I made a couple practice beads on the one I pulled out...beads where the replacement was broken. I turned my welder up on dcep till it burned through, backed it off about 20 amps and went for it. it is my old work Truck, not a customers. I drive everyday still and no problems...not as pretty as if I had removed it and tigged or miged it but it's still holding and never leaked a drop.
Reply:If it's not a structural weld, I hate to say it on a welding site, but you might just JB weld it. Clean it and dry it well, maybe even plug the vent and put a slight vacuum on it.
Reply:The case is aluminum, you never stated if your home mig has a spool gun. Is the crack leaking oil or something? If so I'd say jb weld it.
Reply:I had an oil pan cracked on a Toyota Land cruiser a couple years back and I found a 2 part epoxy paste like the JB weld. by mistake one day I found it very useful to preheat the cracked area and apply the stuff. we still service this same vehicle every 5 thousand miles. pan is as dry today as it was new. I'll post a pic of the stuff tomorrow, I can't think of the name brand off my mind right now. I'll post it tomorrow..it really works well with cast aluminum if you'll heat it up a little...I use a plumbers propane torch when I use the stuff. I did apply some of this same stuff on the inside of the trans case I stick welded. I could access the crack from inside with the pan off. the stick weld held it and might be sealing but I did use this stuff inside on the cracked area for extra comfort

Reply:If you post up some pics of the crack you should be able to get a lot better answer. This is probably a Manuel tranny sense you said it's right at the bottom. I would think it could be done if you drain all the oil first.
Reply:As suggested, post pictures. If it's what I think it is, what I would do is:1) Drain trans fluid very well2) CAREFULLY drill strain relief holes at the ends of the crack3) Add a bit of vacuum as suggested above4) Groove the crack out a bit to get better penetration5) Wire brush/acetone as per normal practice6) Weld up the crack, then grind down to flush7) Add cover patch for increased strengthI would use TIG, not MIG, and have someone who knows what they are doing weld it, perhaps you do the prep then take it to a welder as you have stated you are "not a pro"??I'm not a pro either, but can run a bead....Up to you.Chay
Reply:PICS would be best to see what you are dealing with.....
