Wondering if anyone may have an answer for this. My 6G TIG, 1/2" pipe, carbon steel, no backing gas covers me for stainless. Would not a MIG steel pipe cert cover stainless as well?

Reply:Carbon steel pipe and stainless pipe tig are not covered under the same test in Canada. One is P1, the other is P8. 2 different pressure tests.I don't know how one test with no back shielding required covers you for a process that requires back shielding?JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:We take a carbon steel test, which allows us to weld c/s, and an inconel test, which allows us to weld inconel, stainless steel, nicu, and cuni. This is for non-nuclear. For nuclear, each alloy is welded separately. These pipe butt tests are 1" pipe, welded (6-G) with a restricted access (mirror welded on the backside) TIG, using consumable inserts.Rich
Reply:Thinking about my previous post, the difference in the P1 and P8 tests is the carbon is stick, stainless is tig. I stand corrected. So, In some plants or situations a carbon tig ticket may cover you to tig alloy pipe also. Site specific I guess.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720 |
