I just bought a lincoln ac 180t for $50.  I got almost 100 pounds of Excalibur 7018 h4r 3/32 for free and i can't get an arc to strike because the job i was on was over and the contractor didn't want it. This rod is nearly bran new and has been stored in a dry heated trailor since coming from the supplier.  Ive tried everything, but it just won't hold an arc, it just sparks and sticks.   Ive got some 3/32 6013 that came with the welder that looks like its 20 years old and it works just fine.  Isn't 7018 an ac rod? What could be the problem?  I tried just about every setting on the welder, but nothing good.  Id like to be able to use all this rod i got
Reply:Rod may by damp and have to be dried. Do a Google search for the rod number. You also can try using a scratch block. Drag the rod quickly across it and warm up the end.The try to get the arc going before the rod cools down. What is the full model name and code number. That is a odd number for a Lincoln welder. Several real old welders have the AC-180 in their names but no T's What amp setting are you trying to use?
Reply:I tried pretty much every amperage on the welded. Nothing could get an arc to sustain.  I thought the welded was junk until I tried the 6013.   The full model number is ac 180-t.  I googled it and found a few other people talking about it but nothing helpful.  People did say it was a good old buzz box.  I read its the same as a 225 but with no fan.  I may just sell all the rod I have and buy some 6013, since it seems to work good.I have 2 unopened 50 pound containers of 3/32 6010 1 barely used and 1 unopened 3/32 7018 50 poundd1 unopened and I barely used 1/8 6010 50 pounds1 barely used  1/8 7018 50 poundsWhat should I be asking for this stuff on Craigslist  as a whole and pieced out?

Reply:At first I thought the problem was with the welder. But after welding all day with 6013, I've decided the welded works well. I had absolutely no problems with the 6013.  I was just confused be size I thought 7018 could run av.  Oh well. What should I ask for all the rod. I have around 300 pounds.
Reply:Is you welder a lincwelder AC-180-T.Same shape as a AC-225 but has plug in jacks instead a switch. If yours does not have a cooling fan, then the transformer is copper wound. No Aluminum.Be careful with the jack plugs as they are obsolete. Got the 6013 welding good. Pick a higher current tap for the 7018 and try again. Most 7018 rods are ac/dc. 7018AC is AC only.  I have burned a lot of 7018 on my AC stick welder. 300 amp Glen
Reply:The 180 was not intended to run 7018 rods.It was built to run on rural lines with a top line draw of 37.5 amps..I bought my 225 so I could use 7018 rods.A lot of  7018 is tossed out because of moisture problems. It can still be used for general welding with no problem. Many welders cant run 7018.
Reply:The old 180 amp welders had low open circuit voltage. Those were the days when FW-180 (6011) were created. Not sure if 7018-AC works on those welders.Excaliber works on my 225-AC but I have to long arc at first to heat up the rod and then be very careful about my arc length or risk losing the arc.  7018-AC works much better on my machineGordie -- "I believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant."
Reply:Unfortunately, none of your free rods will work acceptably with a low-open-circuit-voltage AC machine. Scrap the open cans, sell the sealed ones on CL and buy some of the rods mentioned above. 6011, 6013, & 7014 are fine for most home-and farm jobs and are meant for your type of welder.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:I found this Lincwelder in a pawn-shop.  They say it is a 1947 AC-180-K.  The asking price is $100.  I don't think Lincoln supports this model with parts, but since I live in a rural area (REA) do you think it may be a reasonable buy?  S/N 10459, Code # 10210 (I think). Thanks, Attached Images

Reply:If it runs, it should last another 10 or more years as long as the insulation is not falling of the wiring and transformer coils. Transformer coils can be recoated with motor lacquer if needed. It was made in 1948 1947 started with AC-3747 and ended with AC-8175. 1948 started with AC-8176 and ended with AC-14377Code1020 IM124 Fleet-Arc AC-180 or a linkwelder AC-180-KCode 10210 Is a mig 15 and a much newer machine. If you want an owner's manual Go to lincoln's web site and down load it by ,manual number or machine code number.
