Brazing- first attempt in 20 years

I haven't used OA in about 20 years, since I was doing HVAC. Even then it was all silver brazing of copper. Today I hooked up my little rig and stuck a few things together. 14 g tube and some 14 g scrap.How do these look?I ground down one joint as you can see. Is that normal for brazing? To grind or clean up brazed joints. I'm hoping to try OA welding of AL? Reply:Why not if it needs it? I made a new lower door for the cab on my tractor out of 3/4" 16gauge sq. tubing and ground it flat. I got the angles as best I could and new I'd have a lot trouble trying to fill some gaps any other way.

Reply:I have a Dillon, later renamed Henrob (and a few other names since then). I love it for welding. For brazing, I'd actually want something that spreads the heat more, heating a small point isn't always what you need. Don't know how other torches compare since this is the only one I used within the last 15 years.
Reply:Well I'm looking to gas weld some AL, just need to find the lens that blocks the red flare from the flux. I have the light duty Victor, from what I have seen the Henrod, Cobra, whatever whatever is the way to go for AL do to the low pressure. I have an adapter for a B tank and I have an extra 55cf I can swap out for O2 but I also have a couple MC and 20CF so I can take it out of the shop. Reply:So I have a brazing question, I see these new versions of Air Torches, or Turbo Torches. The guy in Praxair tried to sell me one a few moths ago. He says you can "Braze" with this unit, it came with several sized tips that range in size and they attach with something that looks like an air hose quick connect. Anyone ever try to braze steel with one? Many many years ago when I was doing HVAC I started a small window unit company. I picked one up and used it to silver braze but that was 30 years ago, it did very well for me. The copper tubing I silver brazed rarely exceeded 7/8 and most often on window units was about 1/2. Reply:The brazing material does not have nearly the tensile strength as the steel you are welding.If you are doing artwork, it won't matter, but if it is anything resembling structural work, I would leave all the meat - especially on the butted joins.It is not unusual to sand a fillet braze smooth, but leave the fillet in place.
