Reply:I'm going to be doing the same on a dump trailer in the near future now the weather is warming up. I gouged out the floor on my 51 Mack dump truck and it's a lot of work for certain and that job was only 12 ft. long! I'm afraid most of my xmembers were beaten too bad from rip rap and demolition to where most need replaced due to ease.Good start on that trailer.SlobPurveyor of intimate unparalleled knowledge of nothing about everything.Oh yeah, also an unabashed internet "Troll" too.....
Reply:Yeah I was thinking the cross members looked a lot better than most I've seen when the floor was stripped..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:The service those type trailers provide is brutal on them. I had 4" beams busted all the way through top to bottom on my truck.SlobPurveyor of intimate unparalleled knowledge of nothing about everything.Oh yeah, also an unabashed internet "Troll" too.....
Reply:What's the plan of attack for getting the old floors out?
Reply:I cant think of a better man for the job! After doing that bucket repair you helped out on, I dont know how you can keep doing this type of work. It is hard, dirty, hot work, and you make a good job out of it. I only need to do repairs of this nature every few years to remember how bad it is.

Reply:remember working around the mines relining dump beds. lead ore dust everywhere. torch out weld in, repeat.
Reply:I've done a few of those and so I know that it's hard work. I don't envy you on this job. The bad part is you can't even call this a fun job. Good luck with it and charge plenty. Reply:Hey Billy, just FYI, I just seen a guy doing this to a Hilbilt Mongoose, 22' trailer, for a guy I know. They were also replacing the cross members, side skirts, and installing new rear hinge's/pins. The replacement floor was 3/16". They guy I know said they were charging him $6k, which included material and labor.Anyway, looks nice!!! I definitely would have thought of using a torch or plasma, before carbon's. Just because I've always used carbons to gouge out/remove a weld, not to make a cut. Not saying carbons wouldn't be easy, I just never would have thought to use them for something like this."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:For what is worth I have done a lot of those ugly jobs. we would take the side angle plates out also then lay the new bottom in in one piece if possible but a seam is fine somewhere in the middle. First lay the bottom in just wide enough so the new angled sides will cover then tack front and back and no welds on the cross members or the sides. Next cut your angled plates wide enough to cover the old welds on the sides and land on the new bottom and tack everything in place. Don't worry if the bottom bellies up because it will get knocked down in no time. This is the way we used to do it and it worked fine and cuts the working time in half and its a hell of a lot easier to do the job the next time around. I used to back step all the welds. I cut the bottom out of a rock truck one time working from front to back and when I made the last cut it turned into a large piece of pipe.I always tried to work with the oldest hand on the job to gain knowlege but now I can't find any.

Reply:I use propane. Last time I got a real deal, two 100# cylinders & fills, $60 each. But I know propylene is cheap by you. Oh well, keep the pics comin. BTW, are you gonna run hard wire to glue it back together?"Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! Reply:Billy, AWESOME work man!!! I don't know how you got the sides so clean. Usually they're so uneven, I couldn't imagine getting a straight cut, so you don't have to fill in a bunch of dent's. Originally Posted by killdozerd11Hard cap knee pads are a must ...but even that gets old fast
Reply:I use that same knee board, it holds up really well with the exception of the handles.
Reply:Stick-man that's way better than what I use - cheap $5 pads.Have to keep an eye on them constantly because they blow away.Dave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.Originally Posted by MinnesotaDaveStick-man that's way better than what I use - cheap $5 pads.Have to keep an eye on them constantly because they blow away.
