is my new welder broken?

...or is my inexperience showing?My new Millermatic 175 has maybe 10 minutes of welding on it.  I haven't used it since I first got it a month or so ago, but it worked then.  Now when I pull the trigger, I hear relays click but I get no output and the wire drive roll does not turn, even with zero tension on it.  No flow on the gas either.  The fan is running.  It does this when I first it on (the machine is cold and should not be overheated).  Does this welder need to go in for service or am I doing something wrong?  I am an inexperienced weldor so any help would really be appreciated.-Byrdman
Reply:hmmm  where the gun plugs into the machine, there mgiht be a wire plug, maybe...gotta check this myself, but check that first....other than that Ill do some checking myself.  Good luckCHRIS
Reply:Thanks for your reply.  I reseated the plug from the gun to the machine, no change.  I am hearing a click from the machine when I pull the trigger, so I think that connection is good.
Reply:Yank the tip and see if the wire feeds.

Reply:Bummer,  I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but your machine is under warranty so I think you should just take it in and tell them they need to fix it.  Good luck CHRIS

Reply:Are you sure the gas is on?? I believe that click you hear is the valve opening to let the gas flow.  Seems strange the gas isn't flowing.  Also make sure the machine isn't set to purge.Let's try it this way!!!! No, Really, It'll work...maybe.
Reply:The gas was on.  When I first powered the welder up, I turned the voltage and wire feed all the way down, squeezed the trigger and was able to flow gas to set the regulator.  After I realized I had trouble, I turned the tank valve off.  The gauge on the regulator still said 20, with the tank valve closed.  Squeezing the trigger didn't budge the gauge, even though I heard the clicks.  I had to release the pressure on the regulator by cracking the line leading to the unit.  How can I tell if the machine is "set to purge"?  I'm not sure what that means.thanks again...
Reply:but even if the gas wasnt operating he would stilll get an arc..just no gas  pinholing.CHRIS
Reply:Well a fake purge setting would be just what you did by turning the wire feed and voltage to minimum/down/off. The mm175 doesn't really have a purge setting so to speak, just low to no wire feed. Purge is used to charge the line with gas without running out 10 feet of wire. If you haven't used it for a month it is a good idea to purge the line of air and fill it with your mix, so turn the wire and voltage to zero and do that. Then when you want to resume to welder you have to turn the wire feed and voltage up to something besides nothing. The clicking is the gas solenoid. nothing else clicks.
Reply:OK, now I get it.  You're right, the MM175 has no "purge" setting so I turn feed and voltage all the way down to get the same effect.  I didn't know other welders had settings like that.
