Hi, first of all, thank you for this forum. I read some of the threads and very helpful!I am a newbie for welding. Sorry if Im posting in a wrong section. I have this 16ga mild steel sheet and my friend can cut and bend for to make a shelf. Im actually a woodworker and I really wanted to make minimal shelf with wood in front and shelf part is bent steel 16 ga. attached to studs. There will be plenty of holes for studs so Im not really worried about falling off from the wall. also wood part is secured with many machine screws.Im just wondering how much weight 16ga bent steel can hold. any input would be appreciate it. Reply:My greater concern is the glue you will bond wood to steel. Would you consider a hole into each stud with a 1/2" cold rolled rod 15" long driven into it? The rod should have at least one hole drilled through it at the outboard end for a wood screw.This would be stronger in my mind than gluing, or screwing a wooden shelf to the under side of a 4" wide 16 gauge steel. Either way, it'll be stronger than Ikea shelves.Make sure there are no wires passing through the studs at that point.WillieAn optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared. Reply:It's not just weight, but weight over distance (ie leverage). The shelf may hold 10 lbs 2" from the wall, but put that 10 lbs out 24" at the end of a large shelf and it may fold like tissue paper..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Get the sheet metal for your project and make a mockup of what you want with any wood and clamp to secure uprights. Load shelf and see what gives.As DSW stated close more weight further out less weight.

Reply:I found something like this.it says bottom shelf is 9" deep. this one looks like more than 16ga perhaps. mine has 12" in total depth with wood. I might consider making it less deep.thanks!

Reply:You can buy regular shelf brackets for less money.I use them in two shops.No need for glue. |
