Anyone try this 'chemical' tungsten sharpener?

Reply:rideitAfter a few years of TIG experience, the glitch in my process wasthe speed/time that it took to re/sharpen an electrode.If you have technique, you don't have to constantly sharpen.I was weak in technique, but didn't know it .Short-cuts were good  -  Better living through Chemicals. I distinctly remember purchasing the same product you are asking about  -  over 20 years ago.As I type this Post Reply, I intermittently: shake, rotate, hold to the light, the very vessel that I bought 'over 20 years ago'.It's a short glass bottle of girth, and is 3/4 full.  It's 3/4 full because  -  technique over-ran convenience.With this product/treatment, I could not produce an electrode profileany better than that required by a scratch-start production shop.On behalf of rideit - and my limited success . . . . . . .To the Advanced & Technical TIG members  -  please contribute:If Chem/Sharp works for you, how do you make it work, and what are you welding?OPUS
Reply:I mainly just use it on site when a bench grinder isn't available, I keep a jar in my Maxstar case.The customers always get a kick out of it.It works ok, but it takes longer than grinding them.Buy American, or don't whine when you end up on the bread line.
Reply:Throw that junk out or save it for a really rainy day.  Keep a speed chuck drill motor, small and handy.  Chuck up your tungsten and get to spinning it against an abrasive.  Hardly matters which abrasive: grinder, grinding wheel on a 4 1/2", flapper disk, disc sander, bench grinder and you'll have perfectly tapered pencil point tngstens in about 20 seconds.  The really baddly dipped goober up ones take about 35 seconds and the best part? No burnt finger tips.
