So in short my brother needs an exhaust gasket for his car (turbo car) and can't find one locally.  Needs one and instead of ordering one I am wondering if I can make one.Should it be aluminum or mild steel or stainless? Also what thickness would work?  Needs 3 of them I think and at $18 a piece this seems much more budget friendly since I have a plasma cutter.Any help is appreciated.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:I would make them out of gasket material.http://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-gaskets/=m7ztpu  Look at the metal faced or ultra temperature ceramic.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm
Reply:All the exhaust gaskets on turbo cars are metal. The EGTs are 1200ish and could be higher. Not sure how standard gasket material would hold up being that close to the turbo.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer

Reply:It's also not something I have. I am looking to use what I have in scrap. Thanks for the suggestion though.Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:If you want metal then it'll need to be soft to do any sealing.  Copper would be my choice (but more expensive and harder to get than the gasket material).   I'd be afraid that aluminum would get to soft at temperature so that's out.  A thin ring of stainless might work but a full flange of it wouldn't be much better than the faces of the flanges IMHO.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm
Reply:How about mild steel? Also what thickness would be ideal?Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:Most all turbo to mani gaskets are stainless, however they have a punched raised lip in them all the way around the center of the gasket that squishes down and seals up when bolted together. In a pinch I have seen aluminum foil layered up and used.Stainless:
Reply:I haven't seen a 2 or 3 bolt gasket with raised centers. Hmmm.Wonder if I can make a gasket and use my harbor freight bead roller?Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:The material should be thin enough that you should be able to hand punch the lip. I can run out and measure a few of the gaskets I have on the wall if you need to know thickness. But they are thin enough to bend around and flex by hand.
Reply:Any chance you have the gaskets that would fit? He needs them for Tuesday as he is getting tuned that day.If you can measure that would be great. What can you use to hand punch them?Torchmate 2x2 CNC with Flashcut CNC controlsHypertherm Powermax45 Esab ET220i Razorweld 195 MigRazorweld 200ac/dc TigTormach 770, Tormach xstechRazorweld, Vipercut/Vipermig, SSC Foot Pedal Dealer
Reply:Which car and gasket do you need? Do you happen to have measurements of the gasket you need? For hand punching the gasket I had an idea of a piece of wood for a backer and just going around the gasket with a rounded smooth nose punch and hammer.
Reply:For punching thin metal and gasket materials the best punches work like a punch on a iron worker.   These are easy to make (at least in round form). Just drill a tight fitting hole (drill slightly undersize and then ream with a good 2 flute bit will work), cut a slit in the piece with what ever is handy, and use a piece of cold rolled the right size ground or faced flat on the end.   Perfect hole every time and no breaking the gasket material like can happen with the leather punch style punches. Doesn't deform the metal like they do either. Reply:Sorry, i should have been more specific. When I mentioned punching the gasket I wasn't talking punching a hole, I was talking more about the raised part of the gasket that gets squished and does the sealing. I guess I should have more used the term die? To make the protrusion in the gasket.
Reply:That's a problem as well. I just thought that the method of punching the holes would be helpful as well.Millermatic 252XMT 304'sDynasty 280DXHypertherm PowerMax 1250Miller Trailblazer 302 EFIOptima PulserXR feeder and XR Edge gun and more athttp://members.dslextreme.com/users/waynecook/index.htm
