So I just started TIG again after not having done it in 3 years. When I was in school we only used 1/8" 2% thoriated. Now I'm using 2% ceriated 3/32 on 16 gauge steel. Black, completely toasted. I was only running about 60 amps but was trying to play with the pedal. I weld various materials and thicknesses but that was todays problems. Had a lot of trouble with tungsten inclusions and shaking. Any tips on hand control or do I just have to get used to it again?
Reply:Prop up one something, it will steady your hand.
Reply:I need to rest my wrist or forearm. After I turned 40, my hand jitters too much to freehand a good TIG weld. This is my sig. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

Reply:I use a "tig finger" heat shield on my pinky - then I can just drag my finger on the metal and stay steady.Best part is they're cheap http://weldmongerstore.com/products/tig-fingerDave J.Beware of false knowledge; it is more dangerous than ignorance. ~George Bernard Shaw~ Syncro 350Invertec v250-sThermal Arc 161 and 300MM210DialarcTried being normal once, didn't take....I think it was a Tuesday.
Reply:Gotta get comfortable. If bench welding comfort is key...Nice chair the right height..Arms hands allowed at this table...(you are not at a finer restaurant here)Comfort is 90% of it.You would not believe how many come to the TIG clinics I throw once in awhile with hands and arms in the air and try to weld...Get comfortable. However if you find yourself wrapped around a roll cage forget the above information.......zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:MN Dave... Tig Fingers look fantastic. Ordering some tonight. This is my sig. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

Reply:Couldn't resist.. Ordered a TIG finger. Heard it too many times.. Couldn't resist the stubby gas lens kit on their site either..
Reply:Zap didn't mention the Ove Glove. I can't lay my hand on hot metal without a fighting chance. I use copper bars 1-1/2" square, or a bar clamp. I try to set up some thing parallel to the weld bead. The other 50% is confidence. I used to dip often, now much less often. An optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared. A pessimist is usually right, when wrong, is delighted, and well prepared.

Reply:For pipe or tube frame welding I made up some props with pipe and pipe clamps. Some straight pipe, some 90 degree bends, some 45s, some weird shapes. If I need a new one I'll just bend it up. Pipe is cheap therefore so are new jigs. Clamps are these:http://www.irwin.com/tools/clamps/qu...ip-pipe-clampsso you don't need threaded pipe. You can put the jigs anywhere you want and always be resting your wrists. Too easy. Not my idea, I forget who on here (or one of the other welding forums) inspired me with the idea. One of the better known Kevins IIRC. He did sketchup diagrams and all.

Reply:Thanks for all the help guys. Hope to post up some cool project pics soon.
