Hi folks, would love to hear your thoughts on this. I am building a 6'x12' backyard sliding gate with horizontal corrugated metal. now as far as the wheels go, ideally I would like to keep the gate as low to the track as possible. I have 4" cast iron wheels and I'm the gate frame is 2"x3" 11g steel. for this reason I do not want to weld a wheel box under the frame, I would have a huge gap from the frame to the track. I also don't really want to cut through the entire frame to install a wheel box.So why don't I just drill a hole directly through the 11 gauge  for the wheel bolt an inch above the bottom edge and cut the underside out for the wheel. I would have a nice looking internal wheel which would fit perfectly in the 2x3" . I have a friend that's a pro welder and he says that happens all the time but would love to hear more opinions. Pics are welcome. Thank you Side question, on a 12' sliding gate what should the spacing be on the 2 wheels?Thank you, Welder50
Reply:I've done that. Works fine. Enclose the top of the wheel with steel then run a vertical bar from the top of the wheel cover up to the top rail. I'd lay the wheels out 3' from each end, leaving 6' in between and see how that looks.
Reply:Here is a sample wheel I did on a scrap piece, turned out really good for the first try. It actually fits perfectly I just had to grind down bearing sleeve that goes over the bolt. Seems to turn just fine.
Reply:Weld up or don't cut into the radius of the 2x3 tubing.  Otherwise, looks great. I only had 1" of wheel showing out the bottom. Thats why i had to enclose the top of the wheel with a boxed piece. Gotta figure the track is going to add ~ 2" of height too. I wanted my gate as low as possible. I had little overhang of the hot roll steel I clad the gate with. I'll try to find photos. I actually drilled 3/4" holes with a unibit at the corners of the hole for the casters. Then used a cutoff wheel to knock out the plate. This left a radius corner which might help against splitting years down the road. You could always just mig Weld alittle radius in there. As for the track, I welded angle iron to flat bar and anchored that to the concrete for three gate to roll on.Last edited by Jimmy_pop; 06-12-2016 at 10:34 AM.
