Is there a way to tell how old rod is by the label or printed stamp? See pics below, thanks. Attached Images
Reply:If not doing code work, it doesn't matter. If the can is still sealed, it doesn't matter. If they are somebody else's and you want to buy them.  Then they have to be about 75 years old and not good for anything.  They just as well give them to you for "disposal".My name's not Jim....
Reply:i'll bid 20 bucks for them....uhhh, ok, 40 bucks
Reply:Call Lincoln and they will tell you. I have done that before."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:It's Excalibur rod so it can't be real old ...if it's a sealed can buy it for a good priceBacked my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me  What would SATAN do ?? Reply:I have opened sealed cans of those exact rods that the can was completely rusted and couldn't see a thing on it. dumped them in a hot box and they threw down a bead perfectly. Age is nothing but a number haha. Only thing that harms them will be the moisture. If they haven't seen moisture your good to go. I would buy them in a heartbeat.
Reply:If it is standard electronics type dating it would be the 21st week of 1991, but that seems pretty old for Excaliber.
Reply:No, read the numbers backwards... its 1912

Reply:Hello ZZWELD, sorry but I can't resist the temptation here, they're not as old as these rods:The other folks have basically answered the important aspects of your question, as long as the contents aren't moist, rusted, and the flux coating is intact, you're good to go. Reply:^^^^Those rods must be from the prehistoric age  They used them to weld the Dinosaurs Teeth back on
Reply:I called Lincoln, they can not tell me when it was made by the markings on the can.
Reply:You might be close. Although, actually, these came from a yard sale that a friend/co-worker of mine went to. They gave them to him to give to me when they found out that he was a machine shop instructor at our college. I believe that they may be from the 30's to 40's era and I'm also pretty sure that a large part of the "flux coating" you see in the photo is asbestos related. On a slight additional side note, I was told/read that one of the highly placed AWS representatives was doing a demonstration at a convention and he would take a "bare" welding rod and dip newspaper in a bucket of water/lime and then wrap the lime/water soaked paper around the bare welding wire and then perform "welds" with it. From observations these welds actually came out rather good. He was illustrating the process that was one of the forerunners to modern day electrode production. Best regards, Allanaevald
Reply:Way to old to be use able, ship them to me.Just a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. Trump/Carson 2016-2024
Reply:30s or 40s is just silly. The can has a zip code on it,the zip code system was started in 1963 and the zip plus four system dates to 1983.
Reply:If you use some and don't want the rest i will buy the rest of the canBacked my CATMA over your CARMA oops clusmy me  What would SATAN do ?? Miller Trailblazer 302 AirPakMiller Digital Elite  Optrel Welding HatArcair K4000Suitcase 12RC / 12 VSHypertherm PM-45Rage 3 sawRusty old Truck
Reply:Hello Bluewelders, I was not referring to his Excalibur, but instead to the picture of the old rods that I included in my post. No I can pretty much guarantee that Excalibur rod isn't even remotely close to that point in time. Best regards, Allanaevald
Reply:I see, no problem, just posts out of sequence.
Reply:2191 it means the 219th day with 1 being the last digit of the year so it could be 2011 or 2001. So it was either made on August 07, 2011 or 2001 or could even be 1991. That's how we put the date on our products where I used to work. Some may use the 1st # for the last day of the year produced and the last three for the day.Lincoln 210 MPVictor Cutmaster 42
Reply:August 23rd, 2013. Nope I didn't make that up.Plug in the Q1 number: 13953823 at the URL below and generate the cert. Cert PDF was too large to attach. https://www.lincolnelectric.com/LEEx...e/default.aspx
Reply:Geeze, my local welding supply sells older stuff than that.Still, even if it said it was a hundred years old, in a sealed can it should still be good.
Reply:Thanks forhire...! The guy on the phone at Lincoln said they can't tell the date by the can...Hmmm??? Thanks again !!!

Reply:Originally Posted by ZZWELDI called Lincoln, they can not tell me when it was made by the markings on the can.I thought I had a batch of Excalibur 7018 that was shedding the flux coating more than it should, could not really track it down but a few months later happened to notice Lincoln was beginning to pitch that 7018 was "...now coming with a more flexible coating...", so sent them an email with the following response:The improved Excalibur 7018 MR went into production June 1, 2014 for sizes 3/32 thru 5/32. For sizes 3/16 thru 1/4, the improvement will come at a later date currently not determined. The date of manufacture can be determined by a date code stamp on the container which displays,Month = 6Year = WDay =1The year code W designates 2014The year code C designates 2013
Reply:Lincoln can tell the date, time made, batch, and machine that made it .We buy lot certified all the time .Melted and mfg on USA for D1.5 bridge work.
