Okay, I've gotten to the point I need to come up with an organized way to store my metal stock (mostly steel).  I'm considering building a cantilever style rack with a couple of levels to hold the longer stuff and then coming up with some sort of basket/container for the short stuff but I'm still looking for ideas. My shop building is a hybrid pole barn (it has a concrete foundation the posts are mounted on rather than set in the ground) with 4' post spacing, so I was thinking of fabricating rack uprights with arms that could be anchored to the 4x4 posts.I recently made something along these lines that's going to be used for woodworking lumber storage.  They're made out of 1x2" tubing 3/16" thick and will be anchored to a concrete wall (not my shop)...pictured below.  These were made to fit a wall with cabinets on one end and a large workbench in the middle, so they aren't all the same...two levels go the full width of the wall and the next two half way.  The ceiling and the cabinet tops dictated the height of the top two levels or they would have been spread out more. They've since been painted, but haven't been installed yet...you'll get the idea.Anybody have good ideas for storage systems?

Reply:Do you want/need to be able to remove bars from the side or is it feasible to pull them out the end? What kind of capacity are you looking for? I don't have, but would like, a stackable storage system. I have 3 unit about 3' wide x4' long. I want to build 3 more so I can stack 3-2-1 about 4' apart. long stuff in the bottom then shorter and short on top. Except for the top it would be end pull.---Meltedmetal
Reply:If you take "pairs" of the racks that you show,,,then weld them together at the top in an "A" shape,, you will end up with a free-standing rack.I have two racks like that, one is about 7 feet tall, the other is about 4 feet tall. The cross bracing of the "A" ends up being yet another storage shelf,, if you have end access.I have had mine for almost 25 years, and they were used when I got them.Mine have easily 10,000 pounds of steel on them, and they have had easily double that amount with no strength issues. One rack has the "arms" angled up, the other rack has the arms flat.I can not say which is better. The best part, if you need to move them, just move them!! No unbolting, and finding another wall to connect them to.

old rack was shorter, and took up more floor space footprint.

New rack is taller and narrower from front←to→back

Welded out with E6010 for the practice.   Welds came out ok.  Definitely got much needed practice, and it hasn't topped yet.  Been about 2 yrs.

Use about 40% less floor-space footprint while holding the same if not more material.

The only difference is I did not end up using the top-most angled tubes for the top rack.  I used all the other ones spaced out equally and it was easier to weld with that little extra space. If you have nothing to do for about 30min, I made separate videos, just run at 2x speed to get through them faster.

(it doesn't let me attach the 6th final video)

Reply:Big thing to consider is,,, and this happens, I see guys move in to a shop and envision all the 20 ft stuff but that goes fast and today buy as needed, the shorts are another matter.   I might find stuff I could remodel as I went, in a couple spots could have added more brackets for bit better yet and these been remodeled a little over the years.
