I have had a 250EX for 6 years now, unfortunately one year passed the warranty. I have put barely any use on it, still half way through my first tank of argon. For the last three years it's been sitting in a climate controlled commercial storage locker as I moved around and then built a new house. I just took it out of storage and bought a bunch of steel to weld up a stair railing. I need the stair railing built as a safety issue to get occupancy in my house, the delay in completion is now going to mess with the bank and my insurance. As soon as I flicked on the breaker on the back of the machine it blew my 40A breaker in the panel immediately. I then checked the resistance from hot to hot on the welder plug, and I get 14 ohms, which I doubt is a normal reading. I called Everlast, who told me to take the machine apart and look on the left side, which is where the rectifier and input capacitors are. They figured there would be a visually obvious short if it was blowing a 40A breaker, but everything looks normal. The tech I spoke to also seemed to think it was likely something had nested in there while in storage, but being in a climate controlled commercial storage locker, I was suspect of that diagnoses. There's definitely no nesting, in fact, barely any dust, it all looks brand new, and basically is, as far as usage goes. Now I am left with the prospect of sending it away for an unknown repair cost and covering the shipping. I was very much hoping to just see a burnt out capacitor or something else obvious, which I could replace myself. I have some experience with simple circuits, making PCBs and soldering, so I'm comfortable replacing a component, but without the schematic or a repair guide, I'm not able to diagnose the issue. Has anyone else had a problem like this before so I know where to start? Thanks for any help offered. Feeling pretty bummed out right now.
Reply:If you'll call tech support, they can give you a minimum estimate.  They can also go further in diagnosing if you will tell them that. Reply:I have a good news update. I thought I'd take the case off again to take some photos to post, and while I had it off I tried turning the machine on again in case there was any visible shorting that somehow wasn't leaving any scorch marks. This time I saw the front of the machine light up for a moment before the breaker went, so I tried it again right away and it came to life. Seems I might have a particularly sensitive 40A breaker that is tripping from the inrush current. If I wait a while for all the caps to discharge it'll throw the breaker again, but after the initial breaker throw charges the caps somewhat, turning it on again right away works. Very happy to discover it's likely not the machine at all. The plug in the garage has been wired with 6 gauge, and I'll be using a 50A breaker soon, the electrician just installed a 40A for now because 50's were having covid supply chain issues at the time of install and they couldn't get any, so hopefully after switching to a 50A I won't be having any more issues. Just welded up a flange for my wood stove cold air intake (they wanted $100 for a 5" flange) and all seems to be working normally, other than myself, I'm in need of some practice to get back up to par.
