I've been using and destroying plain fiberglass blankets for years. At my age now I can't take the fiberglass anymore. Now it drives me nuts to get it on me. When they are new they are fine but soon as they start to fray, shred etc. It's all over.I have been looking into Silica and carbon felt blankets but I do not have any experience with them.I've also have never used the silicon coated or acrylic coated fiberglass blankets.I need heavy duty or extra heavy duty only. They are a consumable to me. I know about the ounce weights. I just need insight on these newer material blankets.Example: what the hell is pre oxygenated carbon felt.I do everything with these blankets. Cover my legs when needed, weld with the arc touching them, kneel on them, use them as a catch when arc gouging, etc.Last edited by Freebirdwelds; 1 Week Ago at 01:23 PM.Lincoln 330MPXLincoln Power Mig 256Lincoln LN-25X Wire FeederMagnum PRO 250LX GT Spool GunModified Lincoln 225¼ Ton of Torches OFC-A OFG-AAir Carbon Arc GougingEverlast 62i Plasma CutterIngersoll Rand Type 30 14hpInstagram: #Freebird Welds
Reply:The only thing I use is a chrome leather blanket. Maybe the solution is to have one of each and use the itchy blanket only when it's close to the arc or when gouging, and the leather blanket at other times.
Reply:i've had a Steiner velvet shield for about 10 years. I use it to shield machinery from grinding sparks, plasma cutting dross and sparks, and welding sparks. Most of my cutting is done below 30 amps, and welding is under 150 amps most of the time. This  blanket is so much nicer to use in the machinery I'm protecting(mostly small spaces, with stainless sheet metal and frames) because its almost like a fleece blanket in feel. Mine has some tears and shredded spots, but I don't use it that hard. I think  I bought it from my travelling tool guy(Chromate) for about $200 , probably much cheaper online. Mine doesn't have grommets, so I clamp it to something if I have too. We still use the big old fiberglass ones to cover entire machines, we can use the grommets to tie it off like a tent so stuff rolls off. you really should try one , there are places where you will like them. Although they are not as fire proof as the fiberglass. Direct flame from torch , or arc too hot and close will damage it. Half the time I use it , is when soldering copper pipes in the 200 old building where my companies main office is.  Just my experience with them, you should try one .good luckAirco 250 ac/dc Heliwelder Square waveMiller Synchrowave 180 sdMiller Econo Twin HFLincoln 210 MPDayton 225 ac/dcVictor torchesSnap-On YA-212Lotos Cut60DPrimeweld 225 ac/dcPrimeweld mig180Miller AEAD-200

Reply:Related but not quite on point for you is that I know about some carbon fabrics that are capable of withstanding some incredible conditions. Things like having molten metal splashed on you and not bursting into flames or burning through.  Hardcore foundry type stuff.  One company I know that makes these materials is called CarbonX (there are others) and might be worth checking into.  They have all sorts of fabrics from stretchy to heavy and stiff and I would think most of them could make excellent blankets for your needs. They might be the source of the carbon materials you see used in the blankets you are looking at. It won't be cheap...-DaveXMT304 with: 22A Feeder, or HF251 Hi Freq DC TIG air cooled
