The pic shows my test runs vertical beads (welding downhill) on 3/16 plate with 1/8 E6013 rod DCEN at 85 amps. The project will be butt welds horizontal and vertical with 60 degree bevel on the same a36 mild steel plate.* I am having a lot of difficulty with arc blow, constantly fighting it. Ground clamp is just 8" away from the bead. *I also am having trouble fighting the slag pool from running over the puddle, uphill was more difficult very droopy beads.Yes I will keep my day job.

Reply:DCEN  ? What machine are you using ? If it really is arc blow, AC would help. That's not a lot of amps, or a confined area so I'm not sure its arc blow. 6013 can be tricky in the vertical position, vertical up is usually a better choice , less likely to get slag trapped in the root. You might find other rods are a little bit easier in the vertical position 6011, 7018 being the most common. You may not have them available to you, so you will have to practice. Changing current, electrode angle, arc length are part of the solution. Its a little bit frustrating, but it is possible to get good welds with 6013.   What brand are you using by the way, these  :

They seem to be popular outside the USAregards

Reply:I would recommend the Lincoln book on welding.  It very good book for problems like this.I learned first on E6013 later E7018. E6013 works great on small low cost welders. E7018 does best with a good DC welder and heated rod. The 3 rods that I had the truck was E6011, E6013 and E7018. Dave

Reply:1st, turn the macchine to DC+ and then bust those knobs off so you aint tempted to fool with them every time you read a new post and second, the 1/8 6013 is really a 115A rod, 85 is for 3/32.www.urkafarms.com
Reply:Back when they used books there was a paragraph in the whole thingg described true arc blow on magnitized material, soon it will be in every other thread.  This aint it.  The current is too low andf doesnt sho the slag out of the way.   For the good news,,,, the operator has good natural skill to do it that well despite the setting.    When you are learniung to do this,,, turn it way up till you are melting thru and then turn it down till you can manage it.  Quit trying to sneak up on the right heat, do it from the other direction, top down.  Never see a hole with lack of penetration,,, ha.  While there are flaws I believe the point here was to show how much of the base could be melted and restacked.  The popst plate of the T joint almost completely melted thru.  Hot electr4ode, operator use technique to control the deposit.

Reply:Looks way cold. Vertical down requires more rod angle to keep the slag pushed back. Amp setting is also more critical as the arc force is needed to keep the slag from overrunning the weld pool .
Reply:The weldor,,, the person is working hard to do a good job but it needs turned up to let the welder do the work and let the weldor hang on for the ride.  Lpuie,,, actually 13 is used down quite a little especially light sheet and by guys cant weld up. It will drag.  I dont use it anymore but a couple ways to do up and even the drag is a modifided whip so to speak to lengthen and widen the puddle and to give some time to work those bubbles out.www.urkafarms.com

Reply:Good price.I tried a Japanese rod in 1970's and no one like rod. Also try scrape yard rod it was worse. Back 1970's we had a welding rod shortage and look for anything. After that I would keep at less 500 pounds to over 1,000 pounds of rod just in cast of shortage again. Dave
