Hey guys, it's been awhile. I've got a question about hinges that I couldn't find the answer for. I'm replacing standard barrel hinges for a 12' total split gate (6' a side) made out of 2" x1/8" steel tubing. I had my driveway repoured and the grade underneath is now different. My original hinges lasted fine for about 8 years but I always wanted adjustability in case either of the walls move a bit. I found these barrel/j-bolt hinges:https://www.amazon.com/Hinges-Adjust...29&sr=8-5&th=1They look like an easy fix but I have two questions: 1) how can I install them so that someone can't put a 2x4 underneath and simply lift the whole gate off the hinges? With the current barrels, I switched the sides as a trick I learned on here2) will these types of hinges have problems with rain getting into the hinge body? doesn't look like a complete overhang of the hinge body so water could get in.
Reply:you can tack a tab into the post above the barrel side of the post.yes they are susceptible to water, freezing, seizing and shearing if not maintained. sounds like a personal gate. keep it greased and you should be fine. 100 percent of the hinges I have replaced were never greased after installation, thus failure.

Reply:.Just out of curiosity, I looked more closely at the ad. Looks like one pair of hinges goes for $29.99. Clicking on the box for two pair gives me $166.62; three are $249.91 and four are $333.22. If one pair is $30, would not one expect to get 11 or more pairs for $330? What gives??? Screenshots below to document this."Some people have found that companies simply order on quantity, and never look at the price.So, they simply offer a higher quantity, at a greatly inflated price.When the order comes in, the reseller simply orders the Quantity 1 times the quantity ordered,, and pockets the greatly inflated difference.There are offers like that all over Amazon.

Reply:My preference would be to put the barrel on the gate. You will get the vertical support of both hinges and the benefit of the rain catcher down. If I were going to flip, then I would use a third hinge or a tab.If you have to adjust a steel gate, then I would identify where the sag is coming from. Is the diagonal flexing, the post flexing, the post moving, growing heaving, opener causing movement….?

I did this for a simple gate I welded up on the deck to keep dogs off…Normally I would turn one over but this was a non security set up so went easy.
