Reply:I did in Mn. Not so much in Tx.
Reply:I don't know about arcflash but where I live in Texas my shop is heated whenever the sun is out!

Reply:Sort of but not really. My garage is under the house and partly under ground. Between the two there's enough heat leaking through from the forced air ducts that run above the garage ceiling that I never have to put antifreeze in my TIG cooler. I run distilled water only and it never freezes.Miller Multimatic 255
Reply:I have to heat. A garage that doesnt freeze is a plus. I figured Louie had it above freeze.  Sort of is a good answer.  I can see conditioned in some places for sure.  By modern standards and in real usefulness the garage deserves a little heat and cooling too.  They have a duty cycle similar to welders and if a guy takes advantage maybe some kitchen appliances.Last edited by Sberry; 9 Hours Ago at 06:34 PM.www.urkafarms.com
Reply:I leave my thermostat set at about 40 degrees or so. Turn it up before I need to work there. Usually don't go warmer than 55 or so unless I'm painting, which isn't often
Reply:By the same token, in the dog days of summer, if I have the garage doors down, it almost never gets above 60 in my garage. Having half the garage below grade makes it almost like a root cellar. My basement which is separated from the garage by an insulated wall, stays even cooler in the summer.Miller Multimatic 255
Reply:I only a portable heaters they would heat just where you working use about 15 pounds a week.  Same for cooling a small swamp cooler on wheels. It just cost to much before the fuel cost went up. Dave

Reply:For welding, it really depends on how cold it is outside. I don't have a fume extractor so I really need to open one or both doors when running the welder, especially stick welding. if its above 25 or so, then no sweat. below that and I turn into a house mouse. For other projects, I am in the basement mostly, not the garage. But the cold doesn't bother me at all in the basement.

Reply:All my welding is outside rain or shine. 8 hours a day before retirement.  I only wish I had roof overhead just a umbrella on rainy days. 🌧 Dave

Reply:Nope. I considered it a luxury when I sprung for a metalbestos chimney & a 40 year old wood fired hot air furnace. It doesn't burn all the time, only occasionally when I have a project. No insulation, so it doesn't get warm quickly. When I need to paint, it stays 60 degrees, falling to 45 overnight. An optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared. A pessimist is usually right, when wrong, is delighted, and well prepared.
Reply:My shop is 26 x 52 with 8' to 14' walls (14' peak). Half is enclosed other half has 2 walls. Heating is easy well cause I live in SC we get a few morning hard freezes but for example I can run water for washer fluid in my truck year round.I have a 55 gal barrel wood stove I set up in the winter and take down in the spring. I use 2 pickup truck loads of oak a winter. The wood is flush with the sides of the truck and tossed in. Now summer is a whole nother story. I have a 3 foot 38K cfm fan in the peak and it makes the nicest 110º breezes in the worst of summer. Good thing I'm mobile and weld out side most of the time. lolLincoln 330MPXModified Lincoln 225 TombstoneLincoln LN-25X-TVTMagnum PRO 250LX GT Spool Gun¼ Ton of Torches OFC-A / OFG-ASMAW FCAW GMAW Air Carbon Arc GougingEverlast 62i Plasma CutterIngersoll Rand Type 30 14HP#Freebird Welds

Every time you need them the most, the burner needs attention or the firebox is full of ash, depending on the oil (gear lube VS engine oil) you are always twiddling with the burner to get a good flame. I much prefer the propane heat in my current shop. The tanks have a transmitter that lets the supplier know when to fill them and it's just one less thing I have to worry about.
Reply:After 35 yrs of working in snowbanks and uninsulated sheds with dirt floors, I've got shop heat now. It's a renovated hog barn (been out of hogs for 11 yrs now) so I had to pour level floors. Makes for a short work space (7 ft ceiling) where I didn't raise the roof, but I'm 5'9" so it works well. Went with floor heat and an electric boiler. I love it... no open flames, very little maintenance. I change the batteries in the thermostat every 3 yrs. My temp is set at 63F and I work in my shirt sleeves. F'n love it when it's -35 outside. No AC in the summer... with small windows I don't need it. It stays cool and comfortable as long as I keep the drive in door closed most of the time.

My mechanic uses a waste oil furnace and as stated, it isn't all roses. More maintenance and lots of soot in the shop. Even doing oil changes on a regular basis, he can run short on a long winter like this one.
