Been running a roll of HTP 023 Mig Wire for a while. Had a project come up at a friend's Shop. Picked up a roll of Lincoln 030 Mig Wire which I believe said "L-56" on it. Anyways either his 240 volt outlet was on the high side or that wire burns really Hot! I could control it on horizontal welds but the verticals and overheads, it was terrible! Seemed next to impossible to get a decent setting to run on. It was very aggressive sounding and dug in the same which would overheat and droop. Granted it was 3/16 thick but I just couldn't seem to get good control?
Reply:030 wire with the same WFS as 023 will yield TONS more amperage. So while you were used to using lots of IPM for 023, the same will not work for 030. You have to understand that the cross-sectional area of the wire (with all other things equal) determines amperage. At the same WFS, 030 will produce 170% the amps that 023 will produce, or at least attempt to if the machine is capable. Weird how such a seemingly small difference of 0.007" makes a huge mess.

Reply:AH! This is TRUE ASSUMING that I did not reset!I left out the part where I should have stated that I reset for a starting point based on the Chart supplied inside the door of the machine!Any other thoughts?
Reply:The chart and settings are usually for butt welding in the flat position, you will usually have to adjust it for hotter burning positions. There's still a big difference in total heat (amperage) and metal deposit between the two wires, even when set correctly for each wire. The technique going vertical or horizontal is to make a quick "shelf" of metal then slowly build on top of it. The motion is usually a C C C C type for horizontal, with the low part of the C extending out to make the shelf, or triangle christmas tree shape for the vertical (hard to explain in text, tons of videos on it). It's just the nature of the beast, .023 is pretty rare to use for all but the thinnest metals usually. .030 is a sweet spot for most "home" sized machines. |
