I'm currently taking welding courses at my college but was wondering if it was possible to get any kind of welding job while I am in college still learning.Any advice would be helpful. I would like to get as much experience as possible.Note: I am not certified. The only experience I have are the welding courses. Also, how much do non certified welders make? I plan on getting certified.Last edited by WannaBeWelder; 03-09-2014 at 07:33 PM.
Reply:Ya gotta pound concrete. Find welding shops around you and put in applications. Sure it's possible, get a lab assistant job in school. We had professors hire students in part-time positions. It is entirely up to you to give someone a reason to hire you on.City of L.A. Structural; Manual & Semi-Automatic;"Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place where gold is refined. Reply:chances are you won't be out there welding all day, depending on what the shop does. But it is possible, While I was finishing school I got a job in a fab shop welding, so it is possible and good to have on your resume when you get out of school. Even If you are just grinding, it is good to have experience in the field and your cert/schooling- Christian M.C3 Welding & Fabrication - CNC Plasma Cutting-Mobile Welding-Custom welding and fabwww.c3welding.com

Reply:Yes, you sure can get a welding job while still in school. Whether you have your cert papers of not is not all to important at this time, those will come with time.. Granted some shops like to see them to prove you are willing to try, but you can learn so much by being a grinder monkey at a shop with seasoned fabricators. Disclaimer: I am not trashing "cert welders", I happen to be one and have seen some very talented ones come by, but, I have seen a lot of "Cert welders" over the years that can run a perfect bead according to the code book, but when something on the fly came by them they shut down.... Pick out a seasoned fabricator and soak up all you can!good luck!TOOLS AND TOYSSMAW Mid States Inc. Reply:Probably the biggest issue will be scheduling. Finding a place that will work with your school schedule may be difficult. You can't just get a 9-5 job in a shop. You'll need to find a shop that is willing to work  with you.I agree chances are low you'll be welding all the time. However I did have a young lady in one of my classes who got a job welding PT on trash dumpsters with mig before the semester was done. All they really wanted was a warm body that could squirt wire in the right direction though and the pieces won't fall on the floor before the dumpster left the shop. Skill was NOT high on the requirement list, nor was the pay all that great obviously...As others have said, keep your head down and your eyes and ears open. Learn all you can if you get the opportunity. What's taught in school is often vastly different than what is done in the field. I once had a Prof tell me a design I'd done for footings wasn't the way it's done. However at the time I was paying my way thru college pouring 200+ yards a day 3 days a week, doing  townhouse footings exactly like I'd done the drawing. Her way would have cost 5 times more at least and taken at least 4 times as long, and the job wouldn't have been near as good. She'd never worked a day in her life in the field. I had another Prof who was stunned to find out the kitchen design he'd drawn up for the Habitat house we had to work on for a class had "no outlets". He'd drawn up the plans showing the outlets just off the cabinets. He'd never looked at the job and noticed the floor was way out of level. When the counters went in, all the electrical boxes ended up under the counter tops. He also trapped himself and 6 students in the 2nd floor at lunch one day when he forgot to have them cut out for the stair opening when they plywooded the floor...

We had to go get a ladder so they could climb out a window for lunch. He had major issues in other places in that class as well....

Reply:A local guy in a machining program at our community college got a job with the school as an assistant.  Now he's an instructor and he doesn't really know ****.  No independent job experience, and he isn't particularly good at teaching either.  Suck up and you can go far."USMCPOP" First-born son: KIA  Iraq 1/26/05Syncrowave 250 w/ Coolmate 3Dialarc 250, Idealarc 250SP-175 +Firepower TIG 160S (gave the TA 161 STL to the son)Lincwelder AC180C (1952)Victor & Smith O/A torchesMiller spot welder
Reply:Why not, my son is currently studying (he chose Florida Technical College program) and working part-time at L & C Metals in Orlando. The FTC Career Services Online Center is a great thing really, I must admit. 35 years back, when I was a student, it was not so easy to learn welding, because we didn't have online courses and such a vast range of job offerings for students when you seach online now."We need less philosophers and more welders. Reply:You can work as many hours as you like, so long as it does not affect your studies. A sensible guideline for all full-time students is 12–15 hours per week. Remember that your studies need to take priority.
Reply:The good news is most welding does not need a certificate welder. I would look at small machine shops and repair shops. They like part time welders.Dave

Remember that your studies need to take priority. Working while studying also has advantages. On https://phdessay.com/free-essays-on/global-warming/ I have been working for two years, and, simultaneously, I am developing myself. For example, working enables the development of skills that'll look great on your CV - especially if your job is related to your study area. At work, you'll develop skills such as organization and time management, especially, as you'll be prioritizing multiple workloads. From my experience, I can tell you that I have learned at work a lot of things about global warming. So you raise on multi-lateral domains.
