Hello, how warm should a mig gun (handle where you hold to weld) get after several minutes of welding? I'm using a hobart handler 125 ez.
Reply:decently warm.

1st on WeldingWeb to have a scrolling sig!

Reply:Well, it would be easier if you will say how warm is your gun if you think you have any problem

Reply:It depends on manufacturer if see fiber glass insulation it will get very hot do not touch. If rubber then it Lee's than pan coming out oven. But most welding does not get hot do to not being use a lot at onetime. Dave

Reply:depends on amps, stickout, shroud, gas flow, gun size and duty... it's like saying, how long is a piece of string? For reference, a good quality 320amp @60% gas cooled Binzel gun gets too hot to hold the neck even with thick gloves, after welding a 1ft seam at 280 amps.Water cooled guns are a totally different ballgame, they're amazing.Murphy's Golden Rule: Whoever has the gold, makes the rules.
Reply:I don't know anything about MIG, but I know stick welder stingers can get hot if you're pushing a lot of amps through and the cable is getting fatigued/oxidized/loose/resistant at the connection to the stinger... does the same thing happen with MIG guns? When crunched for time, I've resorted to cooling the stinger in a bucket of water so I could hold it again...

Reply:What kind of gloves are you wearing ?All welding guns, torches, and stingers can get uncomfortably hot. Most well made equipment(Hobart,Miller,Lincoln,Century) is built to handle this, they rarely outright fail from overheating, especially from occasional garage duty(less than 25% duty cycle). Are you running gasless flux core, or solid wire with gas ? Running gasless flux core without enough stick out can certainly make a gun get hot. I wouldn't recommend dunking your mig gun in a bucket of water though, maybe an air hose to cool it off.

Reply:One of the things I've done when testing a used welder is run beads until the cooling fan (on-demand systems) kicks on and then turns off.  In cooler temps it can take a while for that to happen so I'm running bead after bead and the torch will get to the point of being just uncomfortable and sometimes I have to switch hands.  That's using gloves that are light stick welding style and a bit heavy for MIG style.Check out my bench vise website:  http://mivise.comMiller Syncrowave 250DXMillermatic 350P with XR AlumaProMiller Regency 200 with 22A feeder and Spoolmatic 3Hobart Champion EliteEverlast PowerTig 210EXT
Reply:Why would would you touch that part of mig gun. If the mig gun not smoking I am happy. Dave
