My buddy's grandma has a old central machinery drilling/milling machine.  Gotta be 20 yrs old or so. I wasnt able to get any pics but everything appeared to be decent on it.  Would $400 be a good deal/value for it?Lincoln IdealArc 250Airco Auto Pak 130Hobart 190AHP AlphaTig 200

Reply:I have a Rong fu mill drill that is very similar to that one. It was 1.5 hp, but my brother put a 2hp baldor single phase motor on it, and it also has a depth gauge on the front of the head, and a big/heavy cast iron table to match. They are an awesome drill press and allow you to do some machining. The stuff we do is pretty basic. Our machine is a bit rough and could use some attention since the turn handles are falling off and the x axis is either very tough to move or has too much slop when loosened up, but it has been a great tool to have. For that price, jump on it. It beats any drill press I have used, including the old 50's or 60's cman my dad has.Miller 330abpMiller 211 inverter, M150 spool gunMiller 135Miller 375 Extreme plasmaCNC plasma table (build in progress)Femi 120abs portable band sawMany other toolsToo little garage spaceNot enough money
Reply:That's a great price for a decent piece of equipment.  I'd give 250 for it if I were looking for a small mill. The table is fixed, but the head moves up and down on the column.HF does sell some decent stuff.   There's a forum here devoted to them.

My first lathe and first mill were table top units from HF, and both allowed me to make parts to whatever tolerance I needed.   Dan

I went to get one last week, and as of last week, when the guy checked in the system, and there are only two available in the whole company right now.

Reply:its funny, their cheesy manual, which is written in the poorly translated Chinglish that you dont see much anymore, says R8 or MT3, not really definitive. And it lists part numbers for R8 tooling that doesn't appear on its website catalog anymore.  You would think that Chinese manufacturers that sell so many products to the USA would hire just one native english speaker to smooth out the hilarious broken English of their manuals. "Each of machine is equipped with a MT=3 spindle taper..."

Reply:That hex rod sticking out the top directly above the spindle looks R8 to me. Pull the lid off and remove it. You probly need or need to make a spanner.

Reply:Also whats the best way to clean the surface rust off the main post and such?  I have navel jelly would that be alright to use?Lincoln IdealArc 250Airco Auto Pak 130Hobart 190AHP AlphaTig 200Search the Home shop machinist forum for good advice on how to clean up surface rust.   You want to be careful not to cause damage while doing it, and you need to make sure that it's oiled shortly after cleaning to prevent rust.   There are areas where you don't want high pressure spray, such as the bearings.  There are bearings in the spindle as well as behind everything that has a crank on it.   Well, some might be bushings, but you know what I mean.

I suggest HSM because just about every topic you can imagine has been discussed about just about every piece of machinery found in a shop.

Reply:When you get it up and running I would be curious to hear how well you like it. Mill is a great tool to make tools, and other odds and ends for projects. The rust is a concern, ways could be sticky ruff.  Get the Z column freed and cleaned up before you go moving it. Lead screws, lube them up well, check and adjust X&Y end play, pretty sure there will some of that. 250 is ok there is room for improvement.  Just saying from what I am seeing, no pie in the sky, the guy that likes blue... can never have to much of it....

Reply:I would use a wire wheel on the column by either taking it apart and take the piece to a grinder with a wire wheel or use a loose wire wheel on a side grinder and do it in place.  I would use a wire wheel in a die grinder to do the table and ways. Then use a stone on the table to smooth out any burrs or high spots. It will not take all that long to do. Wire wheels can be purchased in different stiffnesses.  If done correctly they will leave no marks on the steel.  Just make sure you use a face shield, wires fly off the wheels all the time. I have a 10" grinder that has a wire wheel on one side all the time. I think I use the wire wheel as much or more than the grinding wheel.  The tighter the tist in the wires on the wheel the stiffer the wheel and the more aggressive it is.Last edited by thegary; 02-08-2016 at 11:54 AM.
Reply:Yeah i got wire wheels.  Honestly though it doesnt even need that.  Im just using a scotch pad and wd40 (appears to be the most common cleaning method)  and everything is just wiping off.Lincoln IdealArc 250Airco Auto Pak 130Hobart 190AHP AlphaTig 200

Reply:You can find lots of help and Ideas for this mill at this yahoo group. https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/...messages/38144As for the mill I have a jet that is a little Brother to that if that is the one shown in the manual. It will will well as long as you remember it is not a BP mill. That means lighter cuts. keep the head as close to the table as you can when milling. (less room for flex) One more thing that is what most thing is the biggest draw back, the round column allows the head to spin when raising and lowering, this will mean rezeroing to the part any time the head is raised/lowered. The work around for this is always plan out your work to move the head if you can. Someone mentioned the depth you can drill is limited most if not all home shop drill presses are limited to 4"-5" quill travel. As far as the size of a Part you can fit under the drill the round head allows you to swing the head passed the milling table so you can drill larger parts. I saw a picture where the poster had actually mounted a part to the side of his stand to drill it, he had it blocked up from the floor. So yes it is a useable mill and drill it is just a light duty mill. So for 250 you have a machine that can make parts most can't.Mark

Reply:It looks like a rebadged RF same casting and handle positions , belt drives etc .I've had one for 20 years and it was old when I got it  . R8 taper and made in Taiwan as is yours . Has never skipped a beat  and has really done a few holes,  3 phase  though. As the other posters stated its a great drill press that can do a bit of milling because of the table . You'll be very happy with it as long as you don't expect it to be a Mill , rather a drill that can do a bit of milling. We run tapping chucks , 18mm end mills and do 10mm 45° chamfers on 50x16 mm 316 with cutter  with it . The only limiting thing to those operations  is my table has a fair bit of slop in it and my belts are stretched ....... both service life of parts issues not a reflection on the Drill.Sounds like a good buy .Wow your tools are so much cheaper than here.BrettLast edited by Brett; 02-11-2016 at 12:30 AM.A good guess is better than a bad measurement
