Hey all,I'm trying to get my old ranger 250 up and in working order again. It sat for a little bit since it ran last. upon trying to crank it up it would fire and wouldn't stay running. When cranking it will start with a little gas poured through carb, but pushes air up as well. Good compression on one side, on the diaphragm pump side no compression. It was acting like valve was stuck open. Took head off and cleaned valve seats. The piston turns, and not much wear in cylinder. Put back together and wouldn't stay running. Checked compression and the same.can squirt oil into cylinder and compression gets better. Got it to the point of it running but not on its own, have to manage idle linkage to keep it running. This machine ran and welded for me a solid seven years while welding code pipe, so I know it has outlived it's recommended usage. But want to service it back to working order for a backup or around the shop usage. I am also building up a 1960 SA-200 red face. The block is at the machine shop and will rig this machine up in my truck once put back together. But that's a whole different post. Any advice or knowledge on the Kohler engines in the ranger 250 is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Reply:I think you need to remove the carb and give it a good cleaning. Sounds like a compression test is in order and I don't understand the compression on one side and none on the other side. Are you saying it has 2 separate crankcases?Ol' Stonebreaker "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw |
