Palm sander grenade

This is new - in class yesterday a student turned on the palm sander, when he touched the wood it instantly grenaded.Anyone ever seen this?  It was pretty impressive

One student even heard a piece hit the ceiling.

Reply:I had a 4-1/2" DeWalt grinder lock up and bust the housing. That sander is further proof that woodworking tools are the work of the devil and are out to kill you.
Reply:That looks like just a quarter-sheet sander, but I have an old RO sander that wants to go into orbit every time I turn it on. Seems like the speed control chip or whatever went haywire and it wants to go like 200,000,000 rpm. Ya gotta put it on the workpiece, then start it, otherwise you're gonna take divots out of the workpiece. Good for hogging off lots of wood with 60 grit but worthless for anything else...I have one or two cheapie HFT angle grinders that behave the same way...they turn WAY too fast and I'm actually concerned they'll frag the wheel.
