Been welding a while never really thought about this until today, stick welding on new construction /buildings does it matter how far the ground is from the weld zone? Like if Im grounded to the first floor and Im welding on the 7th floor, is there any difference is amps or acr blow, weld characteristic changes?
Reply:Yes Typically you use a larger size to overcome this but most do not.I try keeps within 50 foot of welding machine. Dave

Reply:I've welded on marinas where the ground was 500' away from the weld and didn't notice any difference. I welded a copper statue on top of our county courthouse and the ground was on a hand rail going down into the basement, about 400' difference and no problem.
Reply:Almost the same discussion we had with the resistance of the welding rods going down as they burned. What's the resistance of a metal framed building relative to the size of your hot lead? Reply:Try mig you would notice the difference faster. Stick I have gone over 125 feet from the welding machine and the building as ground and you need to adjust the welder. The down side to using a building as ground you can burn all ground wires. I have only take to welder who did .Dave

Reply:I run 00 out to 200' when needed, and then have #2 stingers that are 10' and 25'. I do not have any problems running stick or my mig welder at those distances. My welder makes up the difference in both processes, it has true voltage technology "TVT" in mig mode with crosslink. Reply:Ive never had a frequent issue, my welds look good and pass UT/Xray/visual (Im not perfect some have failed lol) I was welding today on column spices and one column welded really nice, the next one needed a little more manipulation and noticed the arc wondering a little more nothing crazy but got me thinking while I was behind my hood, so I came home looked in my textbook from weld school from years ago and they all say ground as close to the weld zone as you can, witch I do when I can but all you know thats not always possible lol but thanks guys just a little behind the hood conversations with myself while welding a big and time consuming joint lol
Reply:Ground close to work is more stable and does not take out the building wiring. In field thing may not be to bookDave
