Ceriated or lanthanated tungsten for general purpose plain steel and possibly stainless. Supposing thoriated is out of the question. What do each prove as an advantage? Also for general purpose plain steel er70s filler? Tig newbie here if it’s not obvious.

Reply:I am a big fan of the 2% lanthanated. I use a 3/32 almost all the time. Sharpened to a point it is just as good as smaller diameter tungstens on thin material.  and on thick material it is good up to 200 amps. Never found the 040 and 1/16th tungstens to have any advantage over the 3/32 tungsten for any of the work I do. 1/16th filler will cover 80-90% of your needs. Either ER 70S2 or ER 70S6 will do. the S2 is much better when mill scale is present.Miller Multimatic 255
Reply:In order to keep things simple most people will be 100% happy if they stick to 2% lanthanated.  I've had excellent luck with Midwest Tungsten Service from either eBay or Amazon...priced competitively and they work perfectly.  All tungstens are imported now, so it's a matter of finding the companies that spec higher standards to avoid junk.As Louie said, 3/32 is capable of most work you'll do as a hobby welder.  I keep 1/8 on hand for higher amperage work...especially on aluminum.  I like having 1/16 as an option, but don't use it too much.I think the warnings about thoriated are often exaggerated...if you aren't breathing the dust from grinding it you're probably fine.  It works beautifully on steel and tends to be a bit less expensive.  Ceriated is really only best for lower amperage work.Check out my bench vise website:  http://mivise.comMiller Syncrowave 250DXMillermatic 350P with XR AlumaProMiller Regency 200 with 22A feeder and Spoolmatic 3Hobart Champion EliteEverlast PowerTig 210EXT
Reply:70s2 in 1/16" and 3/32" along with 1/16" and ,3/32" tungsten. I prefer 2 percent thoriated for DC work, altho ceriated or lanthanated would work but may break down easier than thoriated.
Reply:Add another vote for 3/32" 2% lanthanated tungstens for most work. I got mine on ebay from WeldingCity and they work great. I use them for pretty much everything except heavy aluminum. For small stuff, I should probably go down to 1/16" more often than I do, but I'm typically in too much of a hurry to bother.
Reply:What Louie said, until you go to aluminum. Come back then, opinions will expand. An optimist is usually wrong, and when the unexpected happens is unprepared. A pessimist is usually right, when wrong, is delighted, and well prepared.
Reply:Curious why many are saying S2 over S6?  I thought S6 had more deoxidizers and was considered the general purpose stuff and S2 was necessary for welding stuff like 4130, 4140 ,etc.  Not that both won't work for mild but thought S6 was considered the standard.-DaveXMT304 with: 22A Feeder, or HF251 Hi Freq DC TIG air cooled
