Off a 1948 251 6 cylinder flathead. Anyone know what it does?
Reply:It breaks irreplaceable parts. This was a time of experimentation in automotive history. Thankfully that time is past. There were lots of different scenarios like like even into the early 70s. Volkswagon was one on the last hangers on for clutchless manual shifting. Essentially you needed the clutch to get into first or reverse but the torque converter would allow you to shift without the clutch while you were moving. It was difficult to stall the motor too, just put it in first, let the clutch out with your foot on the brake and it was like an automatic.
Reply:I think that is from one of those little military surplus cranes that were real common on the Columbia and Snake River dams. The clutch was to shift gears in the 4 speed transmission and the convertor was use to inch the machine around. 251 Chrysler, right? I worked for a steel outfit years back that had one of those cranes in the yard.
Reply:Dodge and Chrysler had it in some of their cars of that era. It's what moto needs in his pickup 'cause he doesn't like to use the clutch.MikeOl' Stonebreaker "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:I’m not sure what it was in. I have pulled out a vw beetle and it had a clutch but was in gear and not moving. The guy said just give it gas, gutless thing took about full throttle to get it to move. I told my friend it had one on the beetle also I was guessing

Reply:Lars66 nailed it, my dad had an old Plymouth with the fluid drive & loved it for the way it handled some of the mud around here.Last edited by CAVEMANN; 11-06-2019 at 10:37 PM.IMPEACH BIDEN!NRA LIFE MEMBERUNITWELD 175 AMP 3 IN1 DCMIDSTATES 300 AMP AC MACHINEGOD HELP AMERICA!Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didnt pass it to our children in the bloodstream".RONALD REAGAN

Reply:Yes... it's a 1948 Chrysler product, and what it does best is infuriate the hell out of people that don't know how to adjust it or fix it properly... Reply:The volkswagen transmission you are referring to is the auto-stik models. Yeah it was a hit or miss thing . But volkswagen did it best . Still was a rather needless design , but still something cool to learn about . If you look back at all of the things Volkswagen innovated over the years . The w 8 engines, they really have created some over the top things that seem impossible before thought. And are almost always inefficiently cool !Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk
