Old US Made floor jack worth fixing?

I have an older US built OTC 3 Ton floor jack that I bought used some years ago, it leaked when I bought it. I sent the ram out to a guy in another state who fixes them. Well after over 6 months I finally got it back and put the jack back together.....and it still leaked. Disgusted and not wanting to deal with the guy anymore I just used it anyway, storing it on some plywood and cleaning up after it when I use it. Well last week I was reading about the $209 Harbor Freight 3 ton Low Profile Super Duty Rapid Pump Floor Jack and how it rivals the $750 Snapon FJ300. The reviews are all five stars and I haven't found a bad mention about them anywhere. So I brought one home and yes it is a great jack, smooth, powerful and fast, can lift a truck 20" in four and a half pumps and glides along smoothly on nice wheels and swivel casters. I love it. I have another HF lo profile floor jack about a year old, it's a great jack too. Total floor jacks I own is 4 including the leaker, and I seldom use more than 1 at a time.So now the question, is the OTC worth doing anything with? I see them selling brand new for the $200 range now, no doubt made in China. If I recall when they were US made they cost $600-$700. How complex of a job is a rebuild on these, and how do I know it will be successful? I imagine the guy I paid to fix it just put in new seals and maybe the bore was damaged which is why it still leaked. Trying to decide if I want to mess with it, or if it's worth taking it somewhere local. Reply:Personally I wouldn't spend much on fixing it. I've had real good luck with the Napa 3.5 ton professional floor jack. Usually right around 200$. It's a real heavy jack, which when using it on all kinds of weird uses, is a good thing. I think that Daytona would be a good jack for cars or lighter trucks on smooth concrete.Miller xmt304,  Miller S22 p12, Miier Maxstar SD, Miller 252 w 30A, Miller super32p12, Lincoln Ranger 9, Thermal Arc 181I with spoolgun, Hypertherm 10000 ,Smith torches. Reply:The old OLD jacks are worth it if for nothing more then nostalgia. They also had no concern for shipping costs(remember trains ?) so they were built like tanks. A 40 year old jack is not "old". A 50 is close. a 1950 is the real deal and worth baking the wallet over.Today just get a Torin or something with a good warranty. Sadly a "throw away society"
Reply:When I bought my first diesel truck in 2013 I looked high and low to find a USA made bottle jack, I finally found it, one company left in the US building jacks, I don't remember the name of the company but the jack I bought was 160 bucks, don't remember if it was 5 or 8 ton, I transferred it to the new truck the other day, no leaks or weeps. Reply:I have a 40 yr old bottle jack that nobody seems to be able to get seals for anymore. The ram doesn't leak, it's just the pumping piston and it's a slow leak so it's not a big safety concern. I have 2 newer ones so it's just a backup now, but what I did was give the seal a couple wraps of teflon tape. Reply:I'd take it apart just to see exactly how it's built and in what shape the internals are. Once you know that it's much easier to figure out how hard it will be to get it working properly again, and if it's worth it. Even if you figure it's scrap you have learned something.
