I posted this on practical machinist but figured I would try here as well.  I have an older Jet BDB-1340 that I bought a while back and I'm starting to restore it a little. It was stored in a barn and verily used the ways etc. were kept oiled but nothing else was so it has some rust and some of the info on the data plates is worn off. Does anyone have one of these lathes that could share pics of the data plates so I could have new ones made? I contacted Jet and they sent me a few manuals that were of similar models but not this one. I've attached a pic so you can see the model I have.

Reply:Cap. From what I can see from your picture it is the threading gears that are worn off... I don't have a Jet lathe but I will ask around to the guys I know that have lathes.Sent from my SM-G960U using TapatalkI haven't built anything I can't throw away.  Perfection is the journey.    Mac
Reply:Thanks! There is also supposed to be another plate on top of the gearbox that is removable I believe it had speeds not sure.Lincoln 350MPMillermatic 350PSyncrowave 2501969 SA200HTP Invertig 221
Reply:On this type of lathe, the quick change gears are invisible when looking at the lathe from the view in your photos.  I'm sure they're fine if you look up under the apron that the levers notch onto.If you're getting into the headstock, it's most likely that the bearings will have the original numbers on them.  You can cross reference them to just about any modern bearing.  BUT REMEMBER THAT SPINDLE BEARINGS ARE PRECISION CLASS BEARINGS.............NOT WHEEL BEARINGS.  You can put wheel bearings in the lathe, but expect considerable runout................which isn't a bad thing if you don't mind.  Something on the order of a coupla thou. The dooooods at Practical Machinist are a bunch of prima donna jerks. All of the shafts are generally a form of relatively non exotic steel.  They can be made by any grind shop...........although you might tie up as much in a shaft as the lathe is worth. There's some German dood that published test methods for lathes, and other machine tools................I'll try to find it.  There's no point in messing with the machine if the ways are bad, or other things aren't right........................most of which might not be fixable.
Reply:Testing Machine Tools.........Georg Schlesinger.  It's available for free download on the net.  You can find it.
Reply:Looks like a fully enclosed, splash lubricated, headstock..........missing the lid.  The back gear is probably actuated by the lever behind the headstock.
Reply:Or not

Do some pics looking down into the headstock.  It's the two sight glasses that has me wondering.

Reply:You can count revolutions of the chuck in the different gears.  Put an indicator on the saddle, and see how far it travels per revolution.  This ought to give you a feed rate, which also translates to a thread per inch rate.  Off the top of my head, that would be the way to go about it, sans a chart.

Reply:I found this pic online that shows the plate I am missing on top of the gearbox but it's too blurry to help.

Reply:Ya know..............maybe look at the Grizzly website, and try to match your lathe with the lathes they have.  The manuals are given in the description of each lathe, you can download it.  They might have a pic of a chart on it.

Reply:I have the same lathe, its branded Metal Max but it's exactly the same as the Jet 1340. I also have a manual I got jet to send me, I'll see if I can find the digital copy.

Reply:Thanks to chickenfarmer sending me a manual that had the charts.  I was able to use that info and pics to get new plates made hers's the designs in case anyone else wants to do the same.  With artwork done plates are cheap.

Reply:Cap, when you put the plates back on put a thin piece of lexan or other polycarbonate over the top and it will protect it for awhile. Jim

Reply:Most of these belt head machines are similar. You might be able to order new decals from Jet or even Grizzly. Check this Grizzly manual for part numbers. Also the artwork may be clearer than the Jet manual.https://cdn0.grizzly.com/manuals/g9249_m.pdfThis design was very common with Taiwanese lathes but most of that production was moved to China. See this page for more details. http://www.lathes.co.uk/taiwan/

Thanks, I'll look through that manual as well.  I already had replacement plates made by my local engraver just haven't picked them up yet will hopefully get them this afternoon.Lincoln 350MPMillermatic 350PSyncrowave 2501969 SA200HTP Invertig 221
