I have a Lincwelder 225 that I would like to use as a power source in a mobile shop trailer. I know that it puts out 120V at 50Hz, which will run an angle grinder and other dual-rated motors. The question I have is whether it would be possible to run a drill press or bench grinder, both rated at 60Hz to my recollection, off of this power supply.I have looked into power inverters to run off of one of the two batteries, but they can get pricey with such high power requirements. Does anyone have any experience using this type of welder as an AC power source to run anything other than 50/60 Hz rated motors?I should include that this is merely a hobby for me so as nice as a brand new rig would be, its a tad bit out of my price range

Reply:Might want to check but I think it might be DC only outlets and the 50hz could be a problem too. I don't think they put out too many amps either.

Reply:i dont think you'll have too much of an issue with drill press and bench grinder. You'll lose 20% of power but you are also not running those 60hz motors all day so yer not going to burn out the motor.Looks like the 225 can supply 15amp per receptacle.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
Reply:You probably can bump the RPM up a little get 60hz. Go buy a "kilawatt" at HD and use it to check hz.Ol' Stonebreaker "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:It is 50hz AC aux. power. Here's a brochure. https://www.lincolnelectric.com/asse...oln3/im244.pdf
Reply:did they make it 50hz so it would not be used as a back up home generator?speeding it up to 60hz will also probably result in increase voltage i would think.Last edited by filetobeef; 10-02-2020 at 06:28 PM.

Reply:Thank you all for your feedback. I decided to run one deep cycle battery on the welder with a 400W inverter I already had for lights and a small solar panel on to charge. To start the engine Ill use an old set of jumper cables outfitted with Anderson style plugs to draw from my truck battery. That way, when I'm welding it'll be charging both my truck and deep cycle battery... In theory. On a different note, I was moving the welder into position in the trailer today and must have bumped it around too hard despite me being careful. One of the potentiometers (rheostat?) broke. I havent started looking for replacements yet but would be interested in suggestions on the best places to go for parts, assuming there are even multiple options to choose from. Picture of broken part below.

Reply:on the edge of that rheostat should be the ohms and wattage. Just match it up on ebay.

Reply:I found the part at Radwell International Inc. Does anyone have any experience dealing with them? I also contacted Lincoln to see if they could point me towards an approved dealer. https://www.radwell.com/en-US/Buy/LI.../LI-T10812-65/"I thank God for all the freedoms we've got in this country, I cherish even the right to burn the flag, but I'll tell you what, we've also got the right to bear arms and if you burn my flag I'll shoot you"-Johnny Cash
Reply:You should be able to find one with the same values, ohms and wattage for well under 50 bucks. Ya dont need the brand name on it, they're pretty basic.PS, Omite is a good US brand, same as yours. Pick that over china if you find one. I've had no problem with the green chins ones I've used for various applications at 1/10 the price. That said. still dont get hung up over OEM for an old welder. Here's an example, but find one at your values https://www.ebay.com/itm/OHMITE-200-...gAAOSw7p5acOfVLast edited by Poleframer; 10-05-2020 at 11:55 PM. |
