I didn't want to add any fuel to the fire in a discussion in one of the other forums, so I thought I'd ask it here.I have a Stickweld 140 en route to me from California.I got it for a specific situation, where I plan to run it off of a dedicated 20 amp circuit, with the receptacle which is mounted adjacent to the breaker box.I will also be using a 12/3 extension cord, unless convinced a 10/3 would be required.I am also considering getting a Migweld 140.I can imagine there may be times I might want to run the MIG off of a generator. This could especially be true, if my helper/partner/son is tacking stuff up ahead of me.Is there a restriction regarding the use of the MIG machines in conjunction with Generators? Please, I am not trying to cause any trouble here, just trying to avoid causing myself some down the road.I mean, I can weld 18 and 16ga with stick, I just can't make it look as pretty

If there are no explicit warnings about this, I will post a more generic question about best practices when using any welder plugged into a generator, in the Electrical forum on this site.ThanksLast edited by geezerbill; 02-24-2015 at 07:40 PM.Hobart Beta-Mig 2511972 Miller AEAD-200LEMiller 250 TwinNorthern Ind. Reply:my guess is you'd want to use a generator that has a very clean output. I run laptops and pc's off a honda 2000 i generator, but that is only 120v. honda makes a 3000i generator that outputs 220v, but I am not sure how many amps. don't even think or running it off of some cheap generator, IMHO, if one is dumb enough to do that and bust their welder, it's their own fault.

Reply:FYI- the Honda 3000i is 120v only.Anyhoo- plenty of info in the Electrical section on generators and welding machines.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
Reply:sorry you are right 6500 is the 220v generator
Reply:6500 is enough power, but make sure the amps on the 110v output on the plug is minimum of 15 amp. For 220v, we recommend 30amps.LONGEVITYPhone: 877-566-4462 |
