After many hours of trouble free welding my little 140st seems to have developed an issue. When it is plugged into 240v and I turn it on the amperage display briefly displays the set amperage an the fan starts up. Then display flickers off and displays 000 and continues to flicker with the power and warning LEDs lit. On 120v the display just stays 000 and doesn't flicker. It seems to be a control issue because it never went bang or smoked like they tend to do when a filter cap or IGBT gives up the ghost.Anybody know if there is a schematic for this welder or am I going to have to make it up as I go along? My "collection":Homemade Stick WelderVictor O/A TorchAC 225Ideal Arc 250HF 90 Amp Flux CoreHF Mig 170Solar 2020 Plasma CutterPower i-Mig 140EHarris O/A torchHF Dual Mig 131140STAlpha Tig 200x

Reply:Well I fixed it. It had a burnt out 12v regulator near the top of the welder. It's a standard L7812CV regulator which I happen to have a drawer of. I added a small computer fan to keep it cool and added a metal handle to take the place of the less than useful shoulder strap. I'm taking a page out of Mister Tig's book and calling this new and improved welder the IP140. It came from the factory as a good little welder now it is a great little welder. Here's the video of me fixing the thing and adding the fan plus handle. My "collection":Homemade Stick WelderVictor O/A TorchAC 225Ideal Arc 250HF 90 Amp Flux CoreHF Mig 170Solar 2020 Plasma CutterPower i-Mig 140EHarris O/A torchHF Dual Mig 131140STAlpha Tig 200x
Reply:Hey,I scrubbed through the video, whicle catching some points, even though I hardly know my way around a multi-meter.But you've obviously got some mad electronics troubleshooting skills, dude!
Reply:Excellent troubleshooting, video and repair! Great idea to add additional cooling on the voltage regulator too.. The Everlast welder appears to be well made.. What's your opinion on build design and quality aside from this one flaw?

Reply:I am an interested lurker in these forums but registered for the specific purpose of complimenting you on this thread and your troubleshooting video. Outstanding.
Reply:Well it’s been 8 months since the rebuild and it has been working flawlessly. Today me and a coworker were welding on a bridge joint and wanted to run two welders without having to drag two engine drives to the job so I brought in the 140st and ran it off the Miller Trailblazer’s 240v output while my coworker welded with the Trailblazer. We were burning 1/8 7018 at 125 and both machines were handling it fine!

Reply:Iain. I tinker in electronics. Your explanation of how that circuit works was excellent. Thank You!

Reply:Thanks for the electronics lesson, now we know how these inverter welders operate. You should start your own welder repair company, you could get a lot of business from this forum, I bought a 252 Everlast machine and it already crapped out, two of the machine functions quit the first time I used them, the HF degraded and totally quit. It has AC TIG and the arc is unstable, it randomly stops for a split second and leaves contamination on the weld metal. Everlast was suppose to test and repair the AC circuit, got the machine back with the HF repaired but the AC circuit still does not operate correctly.Had a question I thought you might answer, will these Everlast welders operate in AC TIG mode with out High Frequency working?
