How critical is the Hypertherm air filter accessory? I see it sells for near $200 online. Is the filter that comes with the 45xp combined with a good oil/water separator at the compressor good enough?

Reply:I run 100' of line and then put a $15 inline filter on mine. not sure if its needed or not but I'd rather just have it. I also haven't been more than 50' away from the compressor yet so the 2nd 50' airline is still coiled up and taped the way I found it at the store.
Reply:I always recommend a pressure gauge....which should be at the top of your filter so it measures after every possible restriction in your plumbing system. An occasional glance at this pressure gauge while cutting (or air is flowing at torch), and especially when the compressor is at its lowest pressure point just before turning itself back on, will give you an indication of potential air issues that affect cut quality, consumable life and will cause a variety of error codes on the plasma. Add the gauge, occasionally check the filter bowl for signs of oil/moisture and you are good to go!   Jim Colt    Hypertherm

Reply:I found a situation last night when air filtration would be needed. When its real hot and humid and your running a generator right next to your compressor inside a normal pick up bed apparently water starts to become a problem. I had water coming out of every air fitting I had coming into the filter. Hopefully that stopped it from going into the moisture trap in the machine. I really don't feel like taking the shell off to drain that one.
